Grades K–5 Dual Language Program District-Wide Support


 


Position Overview


The Bilingual (Portuguese/English) Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and support to students with disabilities in grades K–5, including students participating in the district’s dual language program and other classrooms as needed. This position requires the ability to deliver services in both English and Portuguese and to collaborate with staff across multiple educational settings, including general education classrooms, dual language classrooms, and Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) classrooms.


The teacher will also conduct bilingual academic achievement evaluations as part of the special education eligibility and re-evaluation process and provide services across two schools based on district needs.


 


Essential Responsibilities


Instruction and Student Support



  • Provide specialized instruction and IEP services to students with disabilities in grades K–5 (Farley Elementary School & Quinn Middle School) 

  • Deliver instruction and services in both Portuguese and English based on student language needs and IEP goals.

  • Provide services in dual language classrooms, SEI classrooms, general education classrooms, and other program settings as required to support student needs.

  • Implement evidence-based instructional strategies aligned with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

  • Provide support through push-in and pull-out service delivery models.

  • Monitor and document student progress toward IEP goals and adjust instruction accordingly.


Evaluation and Assessment



  • Conduct bilingual academic achievement evaluations in Portuguese and English as part of initial and re-evaluation special education assessments.

  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary evaluation team.

  • Prepare clear and comprehensive written evaluation reports.

  • Assist in interpreting evaluation results to families and team members.


IEP Development and Compliance



  • Participate in Team meetings and contribute to the development and implementation of IEPs.

  • Maintain documentation of services, progress monitoring data, and required reporting.

  • Ensure compliance with all federal and state special education regulations and timelines.


Collaboration and Communication



  • Collaborate with dual language educators, SEI teachers, general education teachers, related service providers, and administrators.

  • Communicate effectively with families and caregivers, including providing communication in Portuguese and English when appropriate.

  • Support culturally and linguistically responsive practices to ensure equitable access to instruction for multilingual learners.


Program and District Support



  • Support the district’s dual language program by ensuring students with disabilities have equitable access to instruction.

  • Provide services across two schools or other locations as assigned, based on student and program needs.

  • Participate in professional development related to special education, bilingual education, and multilingual learner supports.

  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the responsibilities of a special education teacher.


Qualifications


Required



  • Massachusetts DESE licensure in Moderate Disabilities (PreK–8 or 5–12) or equivalent Special Education license.

  • Fluency in Portuguese and English (spoken and written).

  • Demonstrated ability to provide instruction and assessment in both languages.

  • Knowledge of special education regulations, evaluation procedures, and IEP development.


Preferred



  • Experience working in dual language or bilingual education programs.

  • Experience working with multilingual learners and SEI settings.

  • Experience conducting bilingual academic achievement evaluations.


WORKING Environment & CONDITIONS:



  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to move about and may be required to traverse occasionally throughout the school building.

  • The employee must also often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and sit, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

  • The employee is expected to lift at least 20 lbs. (i.e. books, school supplies, etc.).

  • The employee must frequently use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and use hand strength to grasp tools.

  • Occasionally s/he operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer).

  • In the classroom, the employee must be able to see and hear on a continuous basis in order to ensure the safety of students as well as speak frequently to provide instruction.

  • The employee will be working in a normal school environment with an acceptable level of noise.

  • This position may provide services across multiple classrooms and educational settings, including dual language, SEI, and general education classrooms.

  • Travel between two schools or other district locations may be required.


 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be established by the Superintendent of Schools in conjunction with the HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement.


 


WORK YEAR:    



  • 10 months, 183 days

  • 3 personal days, 13 sick days, prorated pursuant to date of hire

  • This is a salaried position distributed over 26 paychecks including a lump sum in June to cover summer pay




 


EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the appropriate administrator in accordance with HEA/HSC Collective Bargaining Agreement and DESE regulations, 603CMR35.00.

While performing duties of this job, the employee may often remain in a stationary position for considerable periods of time. The employee will have also have ample periods of standing and may be required to traverse throughout the building. The employee must frequently use hands and frequently operates a computer and other office productivity machinery (i.e., calculator, copy machine, and computer printer). Physical abilities may also include lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling, stooping/crouching, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, and near/far visual acuity/depth perception/color vision/field. Ability must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20lbs for short periods, and walk up and down stairs several times a day. The employee must be able to communicate effectively with students, staff members, and the public in person and on the telephone.
