PURPOSE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
The digital collections services intern will digitize archival material with a range of equipment and participate in all aspects of the digitization workflow. The intern will work in a team environment and receive comprehensive training on established standards, photography and audiovisual equipment, metadata, and material handling.
Materials to be digitized may include documents, photographs, negatives, bound materials, newspapers, and maps. The intern will use digitization equipment, including a PhaseOne camera with CaptureOne and Photoshop software and an Epson flatbed scanner.
The intern will digitize audiovisual items, including but not limited to 16mm film, videotapes, audiocassettes, and ¼” open reel audiotape, using audiovisual equipment. The intern will gain experience addressing long-term preservation concerns while diagnosing and resolving maintenance issues with obsolete playback machines (e.g. reel to reel, VTR, etc.).
The intern will become familiar with RDA, as well as other cataloging principles such as subject analysis and authorized language for the purpose of writing metadata.
The intern will participate in selecting items for special projects.
The intern will help provide reference support and work in the Reading Room.
The intern may have opportunities for networking and professional development possibly including staff presentations and tours.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled in at least six semester hours in an undergraduate or graduate program
- Excellent organizational skills
- Regular and punctual attendance
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative environment
- Ability to work as part of a team and independently
- Ability to work under supervision
- Ability to lift up to 50-pound boxes during a three- to four-hour period of time
- High school graduation or GED and two years full-time equivalent library experience; or 60 hours college credit and one year full-time equivalent library experience; or twelve hours of graduate coursework in library and information science

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Enrolled in at least six semester hours in a graduate program for Information Studies or a relate field.
- Bachelor's degree in the social sciences or humanities
- Knowledge of research methodologies and techniques
- Familiarity with handling fragile library, archival, and museum materials
- Experience with working with digital camera or other digitization equipment and software
- Graduate coursework in history, library science, and/or archives
- Knowledge of preservation materials, practices, and theories
- Experience with preservation methods
SALARY:
$16.00 per hour. This is a temporary student position and does not carry benefits.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to standard office conditions. Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Use of manual dexterity. Molds, dust, and other air-borne allergens may be present.

WORK SHIFT:
Available beginning June 1, 2026 through August 31, 2026. Possible extension dependent on funding. 19 hours per week. Schedule to be arranged with supervisor, Monday through Friday, 8:00-5:00.
The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is a special collections library (200,000 volumes), archive (90,000 linear feet) and museum that facilitates research and education by acquiring, preserving, and making accessible research collections and by sponsoring exhibitions, conferences, symposia, oral history projects, publications, fellowships, and grant-funded initiatives.
Internships at the Briscoe Center for American History acquaint participants with its resources, services, and operations, and provide experience with specific projects. The knowledge and experience which interns gain enrich their graduate studies and research.
In addition to providing general support for the Briscoe Center resources and services, essential functions of interns include arranging, describing, and preserving archival collections, cataloging and preserving books, working at the reference desk, fabricating exhibitions, and enhancing the Briscoe Center's website.
Through stewardship and scholarship, we collect, preserve, and make available documentary and material culture evidence encompassing key themes in Texas and U.S. history. Researchers, students, and the public mine our collections for a wide range of academic, professional, and personal uses. Our collections also inspire our own projects, including books, exhibits, programs, films, and educational materials. The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History is an organized research unit and public service component of the University of Texas at Austin.
