Position Title: Director of Growth and Development
Reports To: Chief Executive Officer
Location: Alturas Network of Schools

Position Summary

The Director of Growth and Development (DGD) provides strategic leadership and oversight for operational excellence, compliance, and network expansion across the Alturas Academy family of schools. Working in close partnership with the CEO, leadership team, and building principals, the DGD ensures that both new and existing schools operate at the highest levels of quality, compliance, and efficiency while maintaining fidelity to Alturas’ mission, instructional model, and vision for excellence.

This role is responsible for leading new school development from concept through opening, overseeing facilities and transportation systems, managing grant compliance and funding opportunities, and building scalable systems that support sustainable growth across the network.

Key Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & School Support

  • Serve as a member of the Alturas Academy leadership team, partnering with the CEO to advance network-wide strategic goals.
  • Collaborate with principals and leadership team members to address operational, compliance, and systems needs aligned with Alturas’ instructional model.
  • Support and strengthen school leadership capacity through mentorship, coaching, and problem-solving guidance for administrators.
  • Collaborate with facilities and janitorial teams to ensure school environments are safe, well-maintained, and responsive to student and staff needs.
  • Provide direct operational and compliance support to partner schools, including Hollister and Lava Hot Springs Charter Schools, to ensure fidelity to the Alturas model.

Grants & Compliance

  • Serve as the primary overseer of grant management, ensuring compliance with all federal, state, and private funding requirements.
  • Manage reporting and compliance for the Charter Schools Program (CSP) grant and J.A. & Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation (JKAF) grants.
  • Act as the primary grant writer for CSP and other funding opportunities, ensuring timely submission, accountability, and alignment with startup and growth plans.

Transportation & Fleet Oversight

  • Oversee student transportation operations through the Transportation Director to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain accountability for transportation reporting, inspections, corrective actions, and compliance with Idaho state standards.
  • Oversee the acquisition of new vehicles as needed, including evaluating needs, sourcing options, and managing the procurement process. 

Facilities & Construction Oversight

  • Lead facilities planning and construction for new school development, coordinating with architects, contractors, and owner’s representatives.
  • Ensure facilities projects are completed on time, within budget, and aligned with educational and operational needs.
  • Collaborate with the Facilities Director to address ongoing needs in existing school buildings.

Growth & Expansion Strategy

  • Lead the charter development and authorization process, including drafting, submission, and board and authorizer approvals.
  • Identify and assess potential geographic locations for future expansion and lead site selection and facility strategy efforts.
  • Facilitate strategic planning and greenlighting processes for expansion aligned with community needs, capacity, and long-term network vision.
  • Develop and manage comprehensive Year 0 startup plans for new schools, coordinating facilities, staffing, enrollment, and operational readiness.
  • Cultivate relationships with external partners, local governments, and funders to support growth and long-term sustainability.

New School Development & Launch

  • Hold direct responsibility for the successful opening of all new schools.
  • Ensure operational, facilities, compliance, enrollment, and readiness benchmarks are met prior to opening day.
  • Lead marketing and enrollment initiatives to ensure strong student recruitment and community engagement.

Vendor & Operational Management

  • Lead RFP processes and vendor selection for key school services, including transportation, food service, maintenance, and landscaping.
  • Negotiate and manage vendor contracts to ensure quality, compliance, and fiscal responsibility.
  • Design and implement scalable operational systems to support network growth.

Leadership Development & Talent Pipeline

  • Directly manage and support Year 0 principals and new school fellows, ensuring readiness for launch and alignment with Alturas culture and systems.
  • Build and maintain leadership pipelines to identify, prepare, and coach future principals and network leaders.

Growth Systems & Scalability

  • Design, refine, and codify repeatable systems for school startup, expansion, and facilities management.
  • Ensure growth processes are sustainable, predictable, and consistently executed across the network.
