Research Intern at Fujitsu's Space Data Frontiers Research Center


The Space Data Frontiers Research Center (Space Center) at Fujitsu specializes in pioneering business opportunities in space-related technologies. Job responsibilities 



  • Develop deep learning methods for global building feature estimation using satellite data.

  • Collaborate with our team members and external researchers.

  • Publish research in journals and conferences. Transfer the deliverables to patents, conference presentations, and workshops.  


 


Key focus areas


Assessing the vulnerability of global infrastructure to natural hazards is a major challenge in disaster risk management and urban planning. Consequently, it is essential to determine detailed building attributes, including roofing materials, structural systems, and occupancy types. Traditionally, this process has relied on resource-intensive in-situ surveys or costly aerial campaigns, both of which present limitations in terms of scope and scalability. This research investigates the structural relationships between building shape, floor area, and estimated height as inferred through advanced satellite data-fusion techniques.


 


Requirements 



  • Currently enrolled, or anticipate enrolment, in a university for the full duration of the internship while pursuing a PhD in Civil Engineering, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, or other pertinent STEM disciplines.

  • Experienced in programming, training, and evaluating ML pipelines using Python and deep learning frameworks like Jax

  • Strong track record of demonstrating through accomplishments such as research publications, impactful projects, or success in technical competitions.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills through written communication and verbal interaction.


 


Who we are looking for



  • Hands-on experience with GPU-accelerated deep learning frameworks like PyTorch and Jax

  • Experience is fine-tuning deep learning models

  • Familiarity with building infrastructure datasets and modeling

  • Satellite-image dataset experience is preferred but not required.

  • Previous experience working with cluster schedulers (e.g., Slurm)


 


The internship duration is 3 months and part time (20hours / week). Locations are flexible in Santa Clara, CA office and/or remote location.

The pay range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to: specific skills, qualifications, experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. The pay range for this position is estimated at $40/hr. to $55/hr. USD. Additionally, this role may be eligible for a short-term incentive based on company results and individual performance.
