Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:
Purpose of Position
Participants will be enrolled in a registered Youth Apprenticeship Program for 1-2 years to foster skill attainment and earn a nationally recognized and portable credential through the Department of Labor. Youth apprentices will observe Firefighters in performing routine firefighting and rescue functions, fire equipment inspections, testing and maintenance, and facility testing. Youth apprentices will receive on-the-job training (OJT) for a Firefighter or EMT position.
Major Responsibilities
Apprentices will work from standard and special procedures, NFPA(National Fire Protection Association) Codes, OSHA, and DOE Orders, job plans, guidance from Firefighters and supervisory direction. Perform administrative functions such as read and comply with NFPA Codes and standards, OSHA and DOE Orders, building plans and job plans. Maintain records of all inspections, maintenance, tests and fires. Observe and assist (where applicable) Firefighters in performing fire protection functions such as inspecting, testing and maintaining all fire equipment. Inspect all buildings for fire hazards or hazardous conditions. Identify conformance and non-conformance with NFPA codes and standards, OSHA and DOE Orders.
Must maintain a valid state driver’s license. Respond to all site fires and fire alarms. Learn to work in radiological controlled areas. Operate associated Fire and EMS equipment within licensing limits. Perform simple skills on emergency responses. Inspect fire extinguishers. Other duties as assigned by supervision.
The work schedule will be flexible and based around the youth apprentice’s academic schedule. Apprentices may work up to 10 hours/day during school breaks.

Incumbent will be required to wear hazardous material and radiological protective clothing and respiratory equipment. Will be required to climb and work from ladders. Learn to work in and around heavy machinery as in a construction / process environment performing hazardous materials mitigation, firefighting and rescue functions under high stress and in inclement weather.

Required Qualifications
High school junior or senior enrolled in Career Center curriculum related to Emergency Services.
