Job Description

Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School is seeking a dynamic, multi-faceted Music Educator to lead our burgeoning Band and Choral programs. This 2/3 time role focuses on the critical "bridge" years where students transition from general music play to formal ensemble performance. The successful candidate will be an expert in recruitment, foundational technique, and fostering a sense of belonging for all students.

Maine Standards & Instructional Leadership

  • State Standards: Implement a performance-based curriculum aligned with the Maine Learning Results (MLR) for Visual and Performing Arts, specifically focusing on the strands of Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting.

  • The Maine Guiding Principles: Design rehearsals that empower students to become Self-Directed Lifelong Learners and Creative and Practical Problem Solvers through musical practice and ensemble work.

  • Assessment: Utilize age-appropriate assessments to track progress in music literacy, tone production, and the technical requirements of the MLRs.

Meeting the Developmental Needs of All Learners

  • Universal Access: We are looking for a teacher who believes every child is a musician. You will be expected to adapt scores and instruments for students with physical, cognitive, or sensory differences.

  • The "Middle Childhood" Specialist: Recognize the unique social-emotional shift in grades 3–5. You will create a low-stakes, high-encouragement environment to help students overcome performance anxiety and the "self-critical" phase typical of 4th and 5th graders.

  • Differentiated Pacing: Manage the wide spectrum of motor-skill development in 3rd–5th grade, providing "extension" challenges for advanced students while ensuring foundational success for beginners.

  • Cultural Responsiveness: Select a diverse repertoire that reflects the heritage of Maine (including Wabanaki and folk traditions) as well as global musical cultures.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Instrumental Instruction: Lead 5th-grade band rehearsals and small-group instrument lessons (woodwinds, brass, and percussion).

  • Choral Instruction: Direct 3rd–5th-grade choral ensembles, focusing on healthy vocal production, unison singing, and the introduction of 2-part harmony/rounds.

  • Recruitment: Lead high-energy demonstrations for 3rd graders to generate excitement for joining the ensemble program.

  • Community Engagement: Coordinate and direct seasonal concerts and school assemblies that showcase student progress to the Maine community.

Qualifications

  • Certification: Valid Maine State Department of Education Endorsement 620 (Music K–12).

  • Technical Proficiency: Ability to model correct embouchure/hand position on standard band instruments and provide healthy vocal modeling for young voices.

  • Communication: Strong organizational skills to manage a 2/3 time schedule, instrument inventory, and parent communications.
