The Part-time (Sat & Sun Only) Rest Area Attendant Supervisor is a working supervisor position that oversees janitorial and grounds maintenance operations at Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) rest areas and welcome centers. This leadership role ensures that facilities meet cleanliness, safety, and environmental standards while supporting and guiding Rest Area Attendants in their daily duties.
Job Duties
Team Leadership & Oversight
- Supervise and support Rest Area Attendants across assigned shifts
- Conduct regular team briefings and assign tasks based on site needs
- Monitor performance and provide coaching, feedback, and training
- Ensure adequate staffing and manage shift coverage and scheduling
Facility & Grounds Management
- Oversee cleaning and sanitation of restrooms, lobbies, and common areas
- Ensure grounds are maintained, including litter removal, landscaping, and snow/ice management
- Conduct quality checks and ensure compliance with cleaning protocols and safety standards
Safety, Reporting & Compliance
- Complete daily facility checks and document maintenance needs in the Work Request system
- Report abandoned or stranded vehicles per established protocols
- Maintain safe storage of supplies and chemicals (SDS compliance)
- Wear approved uniform and personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Follow site-specific safety plans and emergency procedures
Communication & Coordination
- Serve as primary point of contact for site operations
- Liaise with Property Manager and other stakeholders to resolve issues
- Maintain logs, sign-in sheets, and documentation for audits and reporting
Requirements
Required
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in janitorial, custodial, or facilities management
- Basic literacy and communication skills for recordkeeping and reporting
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Reliable transportation to assigned site(s)
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs., bend, walk, stand, and work in varied weather conditions
Preferred
- Experience in landscaping or groundskeeping
- Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, PPE, and safety protocols
- Experience working with diverse teams and individuals with barriers to employment
- Bilingual skills a plus
