Job Description

Experienced level technician that handles mission-critical work in SFWMD's Operations Control Center (OCC), which requires 24-hour, seven days a week operation. Performs routine and non-routine assignments of substantial variety and complexity. 

Monitors daily infrastructure operations and keeps management informed. Learns and assists with new water control facilities being added to or modified in the SCADA system. Maintains and updates databases, logs, files and reports. Analyzes data and sensors to detect critical conditions, system errors/failures and advises appropriate personnel of abnormal conditions in a timely manner. 

Compiles and computes a variety of engineering data. Analyzes, tests and designs data; develops or prepares graphics and makes recommendations. Records and analyzes data and prepares log reports. Performs skilled work through monitoring and research, data gathering, producing detailed logs/charts/maps and analysis.
Communicates and documents all operational activity including but not limited to pumping activities and gate changes with SFWMD water managers and field staff and occasionally stakeholders.  Actively monitors SCADA operating system for alarm activity and adjusts settings for gates and/or pumps when necessary. 

Work schedule includes rotating/varied shifts, rotating/split days off, staggered hours (which may change on short notice), weekend, holiday duty, overtime and extended hours during emergencies.

Has full-performing knowledge and technical competencies in engineering support. Knowledge of SCADA, PLC’s and RTU technology is required for Control System Technician 2 and preferred for Control System Technician 1 entry level positions. 

Applies competencies to work that is non-routine to complex. Candidate shall have solid monitoring, research, testing, problem solving, and verbal/written communication skills. Advanced computer and database systems aptitude and proficiency desirable. Strong analytical and organizational skills are required. Candidates shall have knowledge of Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electronics or related technical fields.

Candidate shall have knowledge and understanding of engineering technology principles and practices as applied to remote control systems technology, algebra, and mathematical competencies. Understanding of the District's Primary Water Control System, Telemetry and Operational Strategies is preferred. Ability to use multiple PCs with advanced SCADA systems software is required in addition to the ability to read and interpret operational and engineering data, plans, and maps.

Candidate shall have the ability to quickly analyze, correlate, and present factual data in verbal, written and graphic form; adapting new technology and methods to increase program effectiveness; preparing operations logs/work reports and effectively communicating with others in person, via telephone and with numerous radio systems and in writing. Understands, applies and adheres to all applicable statutes, laws, policies, and procedures. Has the ability to work well under pressure and in a team environment.

Control System Technician 2 position Typically has an Associate’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and 2 + years of experience. This position works on a rotating 24/7/365-day work schedule, shift experience preferred, but not required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted if relevant.

Position may be filled at the entry level Control System Technician 1 level which Typically has an Associate’s Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and less than 2 years of experience.  This position works on a rotating 24/7/365-day work schedule, shift experience preferred, but not required. Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted if relevant.

Employment Guidelines: 

Control System Technician 2: Typically has Associates' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and 2 + years of experience. As this position works on a rotating 24/7/365-day work schedule, shift experience preferred, but not required.

Control System Technician 1: Typically has Associates' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Electrical Power Technology, Instrumentation and Operational Controls, Electronics or related field and less than 2 years' of experience. As this position works on a rotating 24/7/365-day work schedule, shift experience preferred, but not required.

Valid State of Florida Driver's License required.


Physical Requirements/ Working Environment:
Due to the District's response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies, depending on assigned emergency response role.
Mostly sedentary in an office environment sitting at a desk and operating a personal computer to produce work products.
