POSITION: Paraprofessional Special Education: Sign Language Interpreter
LOCATION: DISTRICT (Initial Assignment: Timberstone Junior High School)
HOURS: 8:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (6.5 hours/day with ½ hour lunch) Monday-Friday
REPORTS TO: Building Administration/Designee
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 Months According to School Calendar
QUALIFICATIONS:

All required Certificates and/or Course Transcripts must be on file in the Human Resources
Department.

Valid Ohio Department of Education Associate License: Interpreter for Hearing Impaired. 1.
Minimum of two (2) years experience as an educational interpreter. 2.
Valid CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certification is required. 3.
Valid CPR/First Aid Certificates are required. 4.
Valid Educational Aide Permit with Highly Qualified (ESEA) endorsement is required. 5.
Must be able to physically guide students. 6.
Knowledge of subject areas to be interpreted or an ability to locate resources to become familiar
with content material.
7.
Knowledge of child development and language development, especially as it relates to students
who are deaf or hard of hearing.
8.
Proficiency in spoken and written English and one or more of the following visual modes of
communication used by students: American Sign Language, Contact Sign Language, Signed
English, Manually Coded English, Signing Exact English, Cued Language, Oral Transliteration.
9.
Willing to participate in special education in-services through Board-approved training facilities. 10.
Experience working with students with disabilities. 11.
Ability to adapt the special needs of the student(s) to the curriculum standards. 12.
Must be able to provide student(s) with physical assistance. 13.
Training or experience in strategies with Autism, including sensory integration, communication
development, visual schedules and applied behavioral intervention.
14.
Emotional maturity and stability with a positive cheerful outlook. 15.
Ability to interact well with parents and district staff. 16.
Ability to move up and down from the floor to work with children. 17.
Must be able to act with low emotion and consistently implement a three-part behavioral plan with
daily documentation, skills in maintaining calmness and minimizing stressful situations.
18.
Must complete all training as required by Sylvania Schools and/or the Ohio Department of
Education.
19.
Work with students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher. 1.
Communicate appropriately with students at individual levels of ability. 2.
Distribute and collect materials for instruction. 3.
Follow intervention strategies for children, as recommended by teacher (s) or therapist(s). 4.
Supervise students while they work, answer questions, explain directions, and give appropriate assistance. 5.

Maintain awareness of classroom, attending to safety concerns. 7.
