Position Summary

















The primary purpose is to provide outpatient clinical support to the Licensed Provider (LP), registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, and work cooperatively with the remainder of the department structure.
















Qualifications



























  • Graduate of an approved Medical Assisting Program.




  • Currently a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant.




  • Maintain current, active BLS certification through the American Heart Association.




  • Must adhere to office policy of annual Safety and HIPAA training.

Responsibilities & Expectations




















































































  • Receive phone calls and messages and return calls to patients and/or family in a timely manner.




  • Triage patients and review with LP as necessary any acute & post op patient issues with LP and schedule acute visits as necessary.




  • Check LP’s schedules frequently for any add-ons or updates.




  • Review and complete incoming and outgoing referrals.




  • Review the patient's medical record prior to visit to verify completeness, including having test results and breast images available.




  • Room patients in a timely fashion; verify patient identity using two patient identifiers. Obtain vital signs, height, weight, and current accurate list of medications and pertinent information needed for the LP to assess the patient.




  • Complete psychosocial distress screening on all new cancer patients.




  • Perform suture removal and surgical site care.




  • Perform and assist with specimen collection with a valid LP order.




  • Assist with set up of office procedures, including both clean and sterile techniques.




  • Assist with office procedures including, but not limited to:

    • Punch biopsies

    • Seroma drainage

    • Incision and drainage of abscess






  • May scribe for providers as directed. All documentation will then be reviewed and signed by the physician after making any necessary amendments.




  • Propose orders for approval by the LP.




  • Accurately arrange for hospital surgeries, procedures, and tests to be scheduled. This includes precertification, authorizations, physician orders, communicating with the patient, and adding to the LP’s schedule if indicated.




  • Explain treatment procedures to patients.




  • Schedule urgent and non-urgent appointments.




  • Accurately completes medical forms and correctly completes and routes billing information to appropriate staff. (Example: FMLA/disability forms etc.)




  • Copy and release medical records according to policy.




  • Document in the medical record accurately and timely.




  • Notify LP promptly of abnormal lab results, testing results, or critical results and review results and orders as necessary.




  • Restock and clean exam rooms after use.




  • Maintain confidentiality of information obtained while performing duties.




  • Medication prior authorizations.





 














Working Conditions



























  • Meal and break times are coordinated with other staff members to maintain adequate coverage.




  • Shifts are scheduled or changed due to the staffing needs of the unit/department based upon volume and acuity.




  • Work weekends and holidays as assigned or as applicable based on department needs.




  • Cross training depending upon department needs.
