New Teacher Mentor Job Description
The New Teacher Mentor will promote a welcoming and supportive environment, helping new teachers feel valued and connected within their school communities. The New Teacher Mentor will address the following topics with the mentee(s) regularly: self-care and well-being, sense of belonging, student relationships, family connections, classroom management, resource needs, stress reduction, and other issues that may arise. The New Teacher Mentors will continue to serve as a full-time teacher in their current school. New Teacher Mentors will meet with their mentee(s) after regular work hours and receive a stipend for this position. Mentors must be on a continuing contract.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Serve as the first point of contact for school-based questions
- Serve as a liaison to connect new teachers with division resources, instructional supervisors, coaches, lead teachers, and other personnel
- Serve as a resource for classroom culture and behavior, lesson planning, engagement, instruction, and community building
- Conduct regularly scheduled check-ins
- Model and role play on topics relating to a new teacher. These may include building student relationships, instructional strategies, communication with families, and classroom management.
- Attend New Mentor Orientation and ongoing professional learning sessions
- Attend New Educator Orientation
- Attend and participate in monthly mentor Professional Learning sessions
- Document mentee meetings
Essential Knowledge and Skills
- Competency of navigating academic programs and resources for your setting
- Working knowledge of professional learning resources for teachers
- Demonstrates understanding of current policies and procedures
- Delivers engaging lessons to meet the needs of all learners
- Possess a strong understanding of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) 5 Core Competencies and the SEL 3 Signature Practices. The core competencies are Self-Awareness, Self- Management, Responsible Decision Making, Relationship Skills, and Social Awareness
Selection Process
The number of mentors for each school will be determined by need.
The application process will include:
- Completion of application
- Principal or Assistant Principal letter of recommendation
- Written reflection based on a provided scenario
- Interview
Compensation and Benefits
- $3,000 per year based on conducting regular check-ins with mentee(s), attendance at monthly mentor professional learning sessions and meetings, and completion of needed documentation.
- Mentor specific professional learning opportunities will be provided annually
- Recertification points will be awarded for attending mentor professional learning and serving as a mentor
