JOB SUMMARY:
The Elementary Teacher (PreK–2) supports student growth in academic, social, and emotional development by delivering high-quality, developmentally appropriate instruction aligned to division-approved curriculum. This position fosters a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment while meeting the diverse needs of young learners. The teacher collaborates with families, colleagues, and administrators to monitor progress, set goals, and support student success. The teacher reports to the Principal and Assistant Principal.
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
- Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Elementary Education, or eligibility to obtain one
- Experience with instructional technology or willingness to participate in required technology training
- Demonstrated ability to meet the needs of a diverse student population
- Ability to build positive, effective relationships with students, families, and school staff
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of elementary curriculum, developmentally appropriate instructional practices, and student assessment strategies.
- Understanding of early childhood development and the academic, social, and emotional needs of young learners.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan instruction, manage classroom routines, and balance multiple responsibilities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills appropriate for working with students, families, and colleagues.
- Ability to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with students, parents/guardians, instructional staff, and school administrators.
- Proficiency in the use of instructional technology and applicable software to support teaching, communication, and classroom management.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)
- Implements division-approved curriculum using developmentally appropriate, research-based instructional practices.
- Plans and delivers engaging lessons that differentiate instruction to meet individual and small-group learning needs.
- Creates and maintains a safe, supportive, and well-managed classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Assesses student progress using formative and summative assessments and uses data to guide instruction.
- Maintains accurate and timely student records in accordance with School Board policies and legal requirements.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, specialists, and administrators to maximize student learning outcomes.
- Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, expectations, and instructional goals.
- Encourages positive behavior, independence, and high standards of achievement appropriate for early learners.
- Supervises students in various settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips) to ensure safety and well-being.
- Provides direction to instructional assistants, student teachers, and volunteers to support classroom instruction.
- Demonstrates professionalism, preparation, and ongoing commitment to continuous professional growth.
- Complies with all federal and state laws, School Board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal to support effective school operations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to effectively communicate and interact with students, staff, and the public through verbal, written, and electronic means.
- Ability to perform essential physical activities associated with teaching young children, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, lifting, and supervising students in various environments.
- Ability to operate standard classroom and office equipment, including computers and instructional technology.
