Job Description

Starting Wage Range: $32.74/hr. - $42.16/hr.

Job Summary:

Create a successful environment that will promote the academic, social and individual development of middle and high school students and their families.  Provide academic guidance and referral services to Tribal members and other AI/AN students at the local School Districts of Willamina and Sheridan. Guide students through in-depth career and college exploration, and individualized post-secondary planning. Ensures effective tutoring services are being conducted. This position’s primary design is to work directly with students, families, school staff and leadership alongside other Tribal departments to support the holistic academic success of Indigenous youth.

Essential Functions:

  • Establishes long term positive connection and relationship with assigned students and their parent(s)/guardian(s).
  • Develops and maintains detailed academic records for assigned students including up-to-date contact information, attendance records, grades, test scores, academic support plans, and IEPs and 504s as applicable.  
  • Facilitates academic coaching requests for students and assigns students to appropriate staff.
  • Leads team member staffing meetings on a regular basis to ensure effective academic coaching support for students and families.
  • Works in a team with Youth Education staff, local school leadership, students and students’ parent(s)/guardian(s) and other internal and external partners to discuss and implement academic interventions and to monitor and evaluate student progress.
  • Meets weekly with students, monitors student grades and confirms students are staying on track with academic engagement, online learning, and graduation requirements.
  • Proactively works with each high school student to assist in goal-planning and preparation for college, career, military, vocational or other post high school development.
  • Participate in staffing sessions with district personnel as directed on behalf of students including Multi-disciplinary Team (M.D.T), Individual Education Plan (I.E.P. & 504), Care Team and other meetings as notified/requested by students, parent(s)/guardian(s), and teachers.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with the Willamina and Sheridan School Districts in the provision of extracurricular academic and social development services held in the district facilities.
  • Assists with the coordination of services between the Tribal Attendance Promising Practices (TAPP) team and the Youth Education Department (YED).
  • Ensures that all participants in YED events follow standard rules of conduct and maintain policy requirements.
  • Complies with all required standards and policies, as outlined in the CTGR Employee Handbook.
  • Provides resources to students and families including mental health, adult education, social services, food bank, and other community agencies.
  • Actively promotes and recruits youth for various internships and opportunities offered by CTGR.
  • Collaborates with Behavioral Health, Youth Empowerment and Prevention, Culture, Enrichment and other CTGR departments to develop and implement youth-centered special events, extracurricular and cultural activities, and overnight trips.
  • Provides student transportation as necessary to and from academic sessions and/or for off-campus trips and activities.
  • Designs, plans, implements and chaperones overnight extracurricular academic and cultural trips.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

 Supervisory:

  • Ensures the hiring, training, promoting, assigning, disciplining and discharging of employees are in accordance with Tribal Law, including without limitation, the Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance (TERO).
  • Assures staff adherence to all policies and procedures, work, safety and administrative rule, Tribal Law and State Regulations.
  • Serves as a mentor, as requested, for Tribal career development.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education, Counseling, Guidance, Social Work or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of directly related work experience with students and educational institutions. Experience in college and career guidance counseling are preferred. 
  • Requires a minimum of two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 

Driving Requirements:

  • Employees may be required to drive for work-related purposes and must maintain a valid Oregon Driver’s License (ODL), meet company vehicle insurance requirements, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance. 

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • First Aid/CPR certification required or must obtain within sixty (60) days of hire.
  • Must have excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficient use of Microsoft Suite.
  • Must relate well with youth of diverse ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
  • Requires knowledge of Special Education (S.P.E.D) processes and Individualized Education Plan (I.E.P. qualifications and development.
  • Requires the ability to relate professionally with parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Knowledge of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde culture, community, and traditions is preferred.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.
  • Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 40 pounds.
  • This position is frequently subject to indoor environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is also subject to time spent in outdoor environmental conditions.
  • Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan. 
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Local travel is frequently required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
