JOB TITLE: Facility Maintenance Volunteer

DEPARTMENT: Volunteer Team

ACCOUNTABILITY: Volunteer Manager

FUNCTION: To assist in the upkeep and maintenance of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA to include weekly tasks as well as special projects as needed. This is an unpaid position. This role is purely voluntary and this arrangement is not legally binding or an employment contract.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out general maintenance work and check the maintenance request log to ensure tasks are completed so the shelter can run efficiently. Examples include but are not limited to:
    • Repairing water bowls/replacing floats in dog kennels
    • Adjusting shade tents in dog play yards
    • Replacing bolts on kennels
    • Repairing guillotine doors on dog kennels
    • Replacing lights
    • Furniture assembly
    • Occasional sink/faucet or outlet related repairs

  • Develop a schedule of when regular tasks need to be completed (i.e. cleaning vents and replacing filters).
  • Provide recommendations for when a professional service is required.
  • Update staff members with progress, reporting any issues, and repairing damaged items as quickly as possible.

We are flexible in the volunteer’s schedule; however, it is preferred for the volunteer to have a set day they come in each week. Availability for emergency work is a plus. The volunteer may decide for themselves whether or not their work is required for the week depending on the maintenance request log.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be able to work without supervision while following guidelines and instructions.
  • Be comfortable working on both short and long term maintenance projects.
  • Have good knowledge of repair work and general maintenance
  • Be conscientious, reliable, well organized, and a team-player
  • Be able to commit regularly to ensure jobs are seen through to the end
  • Be able to lift 35 lbs., stand for long periods of time, move quickly, work with and around animals, loud noises, chlorine or other chemicals.
