Internship Overview: The internship at Midland Animal Services offers a unique and hands-on experience for individuals pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, specifically those with an interest in animal shelter medicine. Position Duties
Key Responsibilities:
? Assist in conducting intake examinations for incoming animals, including physical assessments, vaccination administration, and sample collection for diagnostic testing.
? Participate in the management and treatment of medical cases under the supervision of our veterinary staff, gaining experience in diagnosing and treating a variety of conditions.
? Learn to properly handle and restrain animals for examinations and treatments, ensuring the safety of both the animal and the medical team.
? Support surgical procedures, including preparation, monitoring of anesthesia, and post-operative care.
? Engage in daily care practices for shelter animals, including feeding, cleaning, and enrichment activities.
? Gain experience in the use of shelter software for updating medical records, tracking animal outcomes, and documenting owner surrender information accurately.
? Collaborate with shelter staff and volunteers to promote animal health, welfare, and adoption.
Learning Outcomes:
? Develop a comprehensive understanding of shelter medicine, including common diseases, treatment protocols, and preventive care strategies.
? Enhance technical skills in veterinary medicine, such as venipuncture, medication administration, and surgical assistance.
? Improve animal handling and behavior observation skills, leading to safer and more effective care.
? Gain insight into the operational aspects of animal shelter management, including intake procedures, animal housing, and adoption processes.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical ability to perform tasks involving animal handling and standing for extended periods.
Other Qualifications
? Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a Veterinary Technology or Pre-Veterinary program.
? Strong interest in animal welfare and shelter medicine.
? Ability to work effectively in a team and independently.
? Excellent communication and organizational skills.
