Job Description

Primary Purpose:


            Assist in the preparation and management of classroom activities and administrative requirements.  Work under the supervision of a certified teacher.


 


Qualifications:


            Education/Certification:



  • High school diploma or GED certificate

  • Thirty (30) semester hours of college credit with some emphasis on child growth and development or related subject areas or three creditable years of experience as either an educational aide I or II

  • State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC) Educational Aide III paraprofessional certificate


 


Special Knowledge/Skills



  • Ability to work with at-risk and special needs students

  • Ability to work within a specialized behavior management system

  • Ability to learn, utilize and control student behavior through verbal de-escalation techniques

  • Ability to work well with adults

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally as well as written expression

  • General knowledge of computer systems and software applications

  • Ability to learn and utilize specialized therapeutic restraint techniques to control student behavior, when appropriate


 


Experience:



  • Experience working with students with special needs and students in at-risk situations


 


Major Responsibilities and Duties:



  • Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.

  • Assist in preparing instructional materials and classroom displays.

  • Work with individual students or small groups to conduct instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.

  • Assist with the administration and scoring of objective testing instruments or work assignments.

  • Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both inside and outside the classroom, including lunchroom, bus duty, and playground.

  • Assist students with physical needs and personal care as needed.

  • Assist in managing the behavior of students and crisis intervention, including restraining disruptive or dangerous physical behavior as needed.

  • Keep the teacher and administrative staff informed of any special needs or problems of individual students.

  • Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.

  • Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.

  • Assist in keeping administrative records and preparing required reports.

  • Participate in in-service training programs, faculty meetings, and special events.

  • Treat all staff with dignity, integrity and respect.

  • Conduct physical student searches

  • Maintain confidentiality of information.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by campus principal or senior director.
