What You’ll Be Doing:
The purpose of the Manufacturing Engineer is to create, develop and improve the manufacturing processes by studying product, manufacturing methods and feed-back data. The ME is responsible for maintaining product and company reputation by complying with government regulations.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Production floor responsibilities:
- Recommend, test and implement new capital equipment. Complete individual project plan schedule for implementation of new equipment or software that includes training and process specification completion. Complete hands-on implementation with production personnel.
- Provide hands-on shop floor support and training as required for the production personnel.
- Complete process mapping and resulting process specifications.
- Support continuous improvement teams and their activities.
- Confer with management regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules and other considerations to facilitate production processes.
- Apply statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.
- Provides recommendations for production tooling designs: arbor presses (eyelets, rivets), component prep (special lead forms), wire crimpers, cutters, etc., conformal coating, bonding, masking, potting, stencils (SMT), fixturing (SMT, through hole, final assembly, etc.)
- Assure product and process quality by confirming manufacturing processes.
- Maintain product and process database by writing computer programs and entering data.
New Product introduction and documentation responsibilities:
- Read and interpret Engineering/Customer drawings, finished prints, specifications, and schematics for proper application to production processes.
- Plan and prepare manufacturing instructions, routers, processes, and time standards which includes sequence of fabrication, assembly, installation, and other manufacturing operations with ERP framework.
- Develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods.
- Estimate production times, staffing requirements, and related costs to provide information for management decisions.
- Confer with planning and design staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
- Confer with suppliers to determine product specifications, arranges for equipment, materials and parts purchase, evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.
- Provide material and labor estimates, factored by learning curve for bids and proposals.
Process improvement activities:
- Continuously monitor the production processes for improvement opportunities.
- Work with QA department on SPC, defect data and operator feed-back to identify processes improvement opportunities.
- Actively participate in CAR (corrective action) teams in order to ensure a proper resolution to production issues that resulted in non-conforming product.
- Manage part maintenance database and optimizes the selection of components to minimize duplicate part procurements, improve processes, while meeting customer specifications. Participate in design for manufacture (DFM) strategies with our customers.
- Improve manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning work flow, space requirements, and equipment layout.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and reviewing professional publications.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline highly preferred; combination of education and equivalent experience required.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Skills/Qualifications/Experience:
- 3+ years of related manufacturing engineering experience.
- Thorough understanding of PCB's and component level manufacturing.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated analytical reasoning and problem solving.
- Ability to work in teams and collaborate effectively with people in different functions.
- Detailed knowledge of component package styles and their relationship to manufacturing processes.
- Computer skills - data input & retrieval, word processing, spreadsheets (Excel), flow charting, etc.
- Ability to easily learn new software applications (equipment programming and operation software, MRP system - Visual Manufacturing, etc.).
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Work Environment:
Employees are required to wear safety equipment consisting of: closed-toed shoes, safety glasses, heel straps, wrist straps, and electro-static discharge lab coats while on the production floor and are occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic/caustic chemicals, and minimal risk of electrical shock.
