Job Description

Job Title: Dental Assistant (Per Diem)



Location: CP Rochester Dental Office – Elmwood Ave. Rochester, NY



Employment: This is a per diem position. Days of work would be Monday and Thursday 8:00am-5:30pm and Wednesday 12:00pm-5:30pm. Hours may vary per day.



Required Education and Experience:




  1. High School Diploma or the Equivalent

  2. Certified Dental Assistant Preferred

  3. Education or work experience with acquired or developmental disabilities preferred

  4. Knowledge of Dental Procedures and Terminology required.

  5. Ability to operate various forms of dental equipment required.

  6. Ability to maintain ADA/CDC standards of cleanliness and infection control

  7. Team work and ownership of team responsibilities necessary.

  8. Basic office skills such as typing and filing.

Summary/Objective: CP Rochester Family Dental Center exists to support individuals with developmental and acquired disabilities, as well as the General Population. Essential Functions:




  1. Imparts agency philosophy of “Equal Opportunity, Independence and Realization of Individual Potential” to children, families, program staff and community resources.

  2. Maintains confidentiality of information relating to individuals and their families in accordance with agency policy.

  3. Provides necessary and appropriate assistance to treating dentist for all procedures

  4. Provides assistance at the front desk when needed to check in patients, answer phones, or provide coverage as needed.

  5. Contacts patients for appointment reminders or other items as needed for treating Dentist or Dental Administrative Assistant.

  6. Provides the necessary link and communication between the individual coming in for treatment and the treating Dentist.

  7. Prepares work areas and instruments for dentist. Keeps work area hygienically clean, neat and orderly; Clean, lubricate and set up equipment, per manufacturers standards; dust and disinfect surfaces in Dentist operatory, Sterilization room and general desk area daily, when working; Clean and disinfect water lines; Set up Instrument trays for treating Dentist; Assist treating Dentist with a range of Dental Treatments including X rays.

  8. Primary person responsible for Sterilization of Dental pieces; Maintain the Sterilization log; Maintain and clean sterilization machine monthly-Ensure paperwork is adequately completed; ensure instruments are clean and packaged correctly once sterilization is complete.

  9. Complete Fluoride treatments for patients, as needed; instruct patients on proper oral hygiene; take dental impressions, properly set up for dental impressions; take care of casts and casting materials appropriately.

  10. Assist Dentist with schedule changes as needed.

  11. Assist with transfer of Individuals as needed, using the Overhead Transfer Mechanism.

  12. Perform Monthly Maintenance and Cleaning of all dental equipment.

  13. Track and Update Inventory to maintain adequate supplies.

  14. Clean and organize dental supply cabinets, closets, drawers and carts monthly.

  15. Ensures materials have not surpassed expiration dates for usage.

  16. Participates in conferences, workshops and in-service training as needed or recommended to enhance job skills and personal growth and development.

  17. Adheres to agency’s policies and procedures as well as department guidelines.

  18. Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role uses specialized Dental equipment along with typical computer and word processing equipment. Knowledge of Dental equipment, how to use and the appropriate use, is a necessity to ensure equipment is handled appropriately. Use of a computer and basic office software is necessary in order to maintain cleaning lists and inventory lists and ordering lists.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit, stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 30 pounds. The dental assistant needs to be able to move quickly in order to clean, prep and assist with Dental Procedures. Prolonged periods of standing, leaning and bending is required.



Travel: Travel is primarily local during the business day, but employee may be expected to work at any of our partner agencies.
