Job Description

The Potomac School English Department is seeking a dynamic and collaborative English teacher to join our Upper School faculty beginning with the 2026-27 academic year. This role is designed for a dedicated educator who is passionate about student-centered learning in grades 9-12. Reporting to the Head of Upper School, this position will play a vital role in inspiring the next generation of writers and thinkers within a supportive and innovative academic community.



Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Manage course load including four classes and a student advisory.

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instruction in a manner that facilitates active, student-centered learning using various teaching methods such as discussions, group activities, and occasional lectures.

  • Work with students to encourage and facilitate each individual’s growth as writers.

  • Teach the assigned curriculum, evaluate students’ progress, inform parents of progress.

  • Foster a sense of belonging in the classroom.

  • Keep attendance records; manage student behavior in the classroom and maintain a positive educational environment for all students.

  • Meet with parents as needed to discuss student progress and challenges.

  • Participate in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and other teacher training workshops.

  • Demonstrate personal leadership qualities to inspire student learning, including understanding of the characteristics of the age group taught.

  • Work in an organized, dependable, patient, and creative manner.

  • Advise a small group of students by developing meaningful relationships with them and supporting their academic and social-emotional growth.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
