Job Description

Location: Redmond, Oregon - In Person 

Status: Full-Time and Part-Time Considered, Non-Exempt 

Schedule: 5pm – 7am (overnight shift), days vary (ample rest breaks included)

Reports To: Safety Coordinator

We are seeking a passionate and mission-driven Overnight Safety Monitor to help expand the impact of Shepherd’s House Ministries across all sites and advance this life-changing work. 

Under the supervision of the Safety Coordinator, the Overnight Safety Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for all guests and staff at the Redmond Center overnight shelter. This role involves overnight monitoring, patrolling the property, engaging individuals to address safety concerns, and ensuring compliance with shelter guidelines. The Safety Monitor contributes to a safe, healing environment by employing trauma-informed approaches and de-escalation techniques, collaborating with other team members, and maintaining positive relationships with community partners. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

Safety and Security Monitoring: 

  • Provide a welcoming and safe environment at the Redmond Center shelter.
  • Perform overnight intake and registration for new guests in a thorough and welcoming manner.
  • Maintain a visible presence by standing watch and patrolling the property to monitor safety.
  • Engage individuals whose conduct may raise safety concerns, providing guidance and escalating to law enforcement when necessary.
  • Utilize de-escalation and trauma-informed engagement techniques to address situations with kindness and concern.

Guest and Facility Management: 

  • Guide guests in adhering to shelter guidelines, including Relational Agreements, Good Neighbor Agreements, and other safety-related policies.
  • Assist with providing services such as meals, showers, laundry, hygiene supplies, and first aid as needed.
  • Keep all areas of the shelter clean and orderly, particularly the dorms, bedding storage, and food service areas.

Documentation and Communication: 

  • Prepare and distribute Guest Incident Reports and other necessary documentation to maintain safety and security.
  • Stay informed about individuals legally trespassed or restricted from shelter property.
  • Communicate effectively with the Redmond Center team through meetings, emails, and other prescribed methods.

Other Duties: 

  • Participate in all mandatory training sessions and additional training as required.
  • Fulfill any other duties as assigned by the Director of Redmond Center or other appropriate staff.
  • Collaborate with the Redmond Center team to enhance relationships with community neighbors and maintain the cleanliness and order of the surrounding neighborhood.

Qualifications: 

Education & Experience: 

  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with colleagues, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with a focus on de-escalation and trauma-informed engagement.
  • Experience in safety, security, or related fields is preferred.
  • High level of integrity and ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Proficiency with basic computer systems, including email and document management software.
  • Ability to stay calm and make decisions in high-pressure situations.

Physical Requirements: 

  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol the property for extended periods.
  • May involve lifting or moving items up to 25 lbs for cleaning and maintenance tasks.
  • Primarily works overnight shifts in an indoor shelter setting, with occasional exposure to outdoor conditions while patrolling.
  • Frequent interaction with guests who may have mental health conditions or substance use disorders.
  • Exposure to strong odors may occur due to the nature of the shelter environment and guest conditions.
  • May require occasional travel to other locations for training or meetings.
