Job Description

POSITION TITLE:  Bus Driver


 


EXEMPTION STATUS: Non-exempt


 


REPORTS TO: Transporation Manager


 


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 9 months; 2026-2027 school year


 


HOURLY SALARY RANGE: Bus Driver (fully certified w/endorsements) - Minimum $20.80/hour


                                                                             


Primary Purpose: 


Ensure the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned route or trip.  Operate school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools and other designated locations.


 


Qualifications:


 


Education/Certification


High School Diploma or GED


Valid Texas Class B Commercial Driver’s License with all school bus driving endorsements


Bus Driver Certification


 


Special Knowledge/Skills


Must be 18 years of age


Ability to pass alcohol and drug test


Ability to complete required bus driver safety training


Ability to operate bus


Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions


Knowledge of student discipline procedures and ability to manage student behavior


 


Experience:


Experienced driver with clear driving record


 


Major Responsibilities and Duties:


 


Vehicle Operation



  • Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.

  • Drive bus to and from extracurricular activities as assigned.

  • Check bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and notify supervisor of needed repairs.

  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures and complete required reports.

  • Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and number of passengers transported.

  • Keep assigned bus clean and fueled.

  • Work irregular hours as needed.


 


Student Management



  • Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street and ensure that all students are off the bus at the end of the route or trip.

  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

  • Communicate with teachers and parents on a daily basis regarding student behavior.

  • Maintain discipline and report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.


 


Safety



  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.

  • Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.

  • Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as:  first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflector.

  • Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and immediately inform supervisor of any conditions that are not correctable.

  • Report any hazardous conditions along the route.


 


Communication



  • Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.

  • Foster good school/community relations and good relations among all school employees.


 


Professional Growth and Development



  • Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.

  • Participate in professional learning, staff meetings, and special events as assigned.

  • Tools/Equipment Used: School bus and vehicles; safety equipment such as flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher; two-way radio; computer

  • Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent climbing, bending/stooping, kneeling/squatting/crouching, crawling, pushing/pulling, twisting, reaching; prolonged sitting

  • Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions, wrist flexion/extension

  • Vision: Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus

  • Lifting: Lifting and carrying up to 30 pounds without assistance, 30-55 pounds with assistance, and more than 55 pounds with appropriate assistance

  • Environment: Work is performed indoors, outdoors, and in bus or vehicle; regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, airborne particles, toxic chemicals; frequent in-district travel; occasional statewide travel; occasional irregular and/or prolonged hours
