The Wisconsin Improvement Program (WIP) provides an excellent opportunity for school districts, educator preparation programs, and the Department of Public Instruction to collaborate in the preparation of future teachers. WIP pairs promising student interns with experienced cooperating teachers in a semester-long clinical experience. WIP interns are preservice teachers enrolled in one of Wisconsin's educator preparation programs who complete an internship in place of traditional student teaching.
WIP interns are students nearing the end of their teacher education and licensure program and have been recommended by their university based on their academic excellence and readiness for the classroom. These interns are licensed by the DPI and are responsible for a partial teaching assignment that is up to 50% of a standard full-time workload. Working under the mentorship of an experienced cooperating teacher, the remaining 50% is reserved for collaborative planning, observation, and professional development. To support their placement, the district provides the intern a stipend of $4,500 for the semester.
