TITLE: SECONDARY TEACHER/SOCIAL STUDIES
JOB SUMMARY
To provide a high school social studies program within an alternative education setting that supports students in earning credit, developing critical thinking skills, and becoming informed, responsible citizens. The teacher will promote academic progress, engagement, and personal growth through flexible instruction, relationship-building, and trauma-informed practices while preparing students for postsecondary success.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Idaho teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement in Social Studies (6–12)
- Strong background in instructional strategies for at-risk and alternative education students
- Demonstrated knowledge of social studies content (e.g., U.S. History, Government, Economics, Humanities, World History)
- Knowledge of credit recovery models, differentiated instruction, and flexible pacing
- Understanding of Idaho Content Standards for Social Studies
- Ability to integrate technology and blended/online learning platforms
- Ability to establish and maintain a structured yet flexible learning environment
- Strong relationship-building skills with diverse student populations
- Works effectively with students, staff, parents, and community partners
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple courses, preps, and student progress simultaneously
- Ability to work within timelines and support students with non-traditional schedules
- Maintain confidentiality of staff and students
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY TO: Building Principal
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction
- Prepare for assigned courses and instructional periods, including multiple social studies subjects
- Design lessons that are engaging, relevant, and aligned to standards while meeting students at varying academic levels
- Deliver instruction using flexible pacing, including credit recovery and individualized learning plans
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to support diverse learning needs, including students with gaps in learning
- Meet and instruct assigned classes at designated times and provide support for students working on individualized schedules
- Identify student needs and provide targeted instruction and interventions
- Analyze and use student data to guide instruction and monitor credit attainment
- Implement accommodations and modifications as outlined in IEPs, 504 Plans, and other support plans
- Align instruction with Idaho Content Standards and district curriculum
- Develop and administer assessments that measure mastery and support credit completion
- Support student preparation for graduation requirements, including civics assessments where applicable
- Effectively manage instructional time in a flexible, student-centered environment
Other Duties to Students
- Build strong, positive relationships with students to support engagement and retention
- Encourage students to take ownership of their learning and progress toward graduation
- Establish and communicate clear expectations for behavior, participation, and academic progress
- Support students’ social-emotional needs using trauma-informed and restorative practices
- Maintain consistent communication with students and families regarding progress and credit status
- Be available for student support, mentoring, and communication outside of instructional time under reasonable terms
- Provide a safe, structured, and supportive classroom environment
Alternative School Responsibilities
- Support students who may be credit-deficient, disengaged, or at risk of not graduating
- Utilize flexible scheduling, pacing, and instructional models to meet individual student needs
- Monitor and track student credit attainment and graduation progress
- Collaborate with counselors, administrators, and support staff to remove barriers to student success
- Promote student responsibility, goal-setting, and life skills
- Support transition planning for students returning to traditional settings or moving to postsecondary options
- Incorporate real-world connections and career readiness into instruction when possible
Professional Contacts and Activities
- Attend and participate in faculty, team, and student support meetings
- Attend IEP, 504, and intervention meetings as needed
- Collaborate with colleagues to support student success and program improvement
- Communicate effectively with administration regarding student needs and program concerns
- Provide requested documentation and information in a timely manner
Other
- Uphold and enforce school and district policies
- Maintain accurate records related to attendance, grades, and credit completion in compliance with state and federal requirements
- Complete required data entry and reporting in a timely manner
- Participate in ongoing professional development, including training related to alternative education and trauma-informed practices
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics of the Idaho Teaching Profession
- Represent the district in a positive and professional manner
- Follow district procedures and chain of command
- Perform other duties as assigned
EVALUATION
Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal in conformance with district policy and IDAPA 08.02.02.120.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
By contract, as determined by the Board of Trustees in accordance with federal and state law, administrative rules, and Board policy.
