Job Summary
The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for a one-year, full-time, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Professor position beginning in August 2026 with requirements to be physically present on the Hattiesburg and/or Gulf Coast campuses. The Secondary Education faculty currently provide training to initial licensure candidates in Secondary Education, including students participating in a year-long residency placement. We are especially interested in candidates whose experience includes bridging research and practice. We aim to recruit applicants with a background in Curriculum and Instruction/Secondary who will support both the School of Education’s undergraduate and graduate Secondary Education programs. Program delivery includes face-to-face, online, and hybrid formats.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  

  1. Teaching and mentoring students.
  2. Supervising secondary clinical experiences.
  3. Engaging with community partner districts, schools, and community colleges.
  4. Contributing to program and profession through service activities.
  5. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and assessment.
  6. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will have:
Advanced degree in Secondary Education, Curriculum and Instruction or closely related field (by August 2026).
At least three years of successful experience teaching in secondary settings (6-12) with knowledge of U.S. public school contexts.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate with all groups of individuals in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work with a diverse team in multiple settings.
  • Experience with online learning platforms.
  • Experience setting clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback. 
Preferred Qualifications
An earned doctoral degree
Experience with secondary mathematics or secondary English education.
Experience incorporating technology in instruction and assessment
Higher education experience training initial teacher candidates
