    JOB SUMMARY:
    The effective and successful English Learner (EL) Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality, culturally responsive instruction to students who are English language learners, fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes language acquisition and academic achievement. This role involves designing and delivering language development instruction aligned with district curriculum and state standards; assessing and monitoring student language proficiency; collaborating with general education teachers; managing student behavior; and maintaining regular communication with parents, families, and colleagues. The EL Teacher strives to empower students to develop English language skills while honoring their cultural backgrounds and equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary for academic success.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
        Bachelor's degree or higher in education, linguistics, ESL, bilingual education, or a related field.
        Valid Illinois Professional Educator Licensure with an English as a New Language (ENL) or English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement required.
        Knowledge of English language acquisition theories, second language development, and best practices for EL instruction.
        Displays proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, PowerPoint, and Google platforms for communications.
        Demonstrates enthusiasm when teaching and communicating with students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
        Presents a positive, professional, and ethical image to students, parents, and staff.
        Demonstrates the ability to serve as an educational and cultural advocate for English learner students.
        Uses clear and concise oral and written communications; strong interpersonal skills; and provides information using a multisensory approach.
        Demonstrates leadership skills in working with individuals and groups.
        Bilingual proficiency preferred but not required.
        Health examination for new employees part-time or full-time: Chapter 122 Article 24-5 of Illinois School Code mandates that School boards shall require of new employees evidence of physical fitness to perform duties assigned and freedom from communicable disease, including tuberculosis. Such evidence shall consist of a physical examination and a tuberculin test and, if appropriate, an x-ray. The cost of such examination shall rest with the employee.
        Must pass a comprehensive drug screening.
        Must pass a comprehensive criminal background check.
        Must be able to lift or move at least 25 lbs.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
        Plans for quality, engaging language development instruction utilizing various methods of delivery, including direct instruction, differentiation of instruction, modeling, student-led discussions, independent practice, hands-on activities, sheltered instruction strategies, and technology integration to address the diverse language proficiency levels and learning needs of EL students.
        Uses district-approved curriculum and EL instructional frameworks aligned with the WIDA English Language Development Standards.
        Administers, scores, and interprets English language proficiency assessments (e.g., ACCESS for ELLs) to monitor student language acquisition and academic progress.
        Provides direct EL instruction in pull-out, push-in, or co-teaching models as determined by student need and district programming.
        Creates and maintains a positive, safe, and culturally affirming environment conducive to language development and learning.
        Demonstrates effective classroom management skills; establishes and enforces classroom rules and procedures.
        Manages student behavior and timely addresses all disciplinary issues.
        Supervises students in classrooms, hallways, cafeteria, assemblies, and during field trips and extracurricular activities.
        Displays patience, cultural sensitivity, and tolerance when working with all students.
        Demonstrates firmness and fairness with supervision and discipline of students.
        Provides timely constructive feedback to students and parents.
        Communicates regularly with families of EL students, utilizing interpreters or translated materials as needed to ensure meaningful engagement.
        Demonstrates a collaborative and professional work ethic.
        Maintains accurate records of student language proficiency, academic performance, and attendance.
        Maximizes instructional time and provides continuity of language development instruction.
        Participates in open houses, parent-teacher conferences, staff meetings, school-sponsored activities/events, and student/parent consultations.
        Collaborates with general education teachers, special education staff, and other support personnel to integrate language development strategies across content areas.
        Stays current with educational trends, research, and best practices related to English language acquisition and multilingual learner education.
        Performs as an integral member of the educational team.
        Participates in professional development workshops and training sessions to enhance professional growth and instructional skills in EL education.
        Demonstrates a strong knowledge of subject matter, language acquisition pedagogy, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
        Displays patience, empathy, and a passion for supporting English learner students in achieving academic and linguistic success.
        Develops, implements, and monitors EL student Language Instruction Educational Programs (LIEPs) in accordance with state and federal requirements.
        Ensures compliance with Title III and Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) requirements for the identification, placement, and reclassification of English learner students.
        Assists in the identification and referral of EL students for additional support services, including special education evaluations, as appropriate.
        Demonstrates skills and effectiveness in working with diverse populations.
        Adaptable, innovative thinker with an enthusiastic, energetic, positive attitude.
        Adheres to Board Policy, administrative rules, and regulations.
        Reports to work daily and arrives on time.
        Takes responsibility as a mandated reporter.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Certified 10-month employee.
    EVALUATION: Evaluated by the Principal or Designee in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
    SALARY: Compensation is based on years of experience and the Teacher Salary Schedule in accordance with the CBA.
