About Rittal
Rittal LLC has built a strong tradition of innovation and takes pride in a progressive approach to engineering. We design and manufacture the world’s leading industrial and IT enclosures, racks, and accessories, including high efficiency, high-density power management, and climate control systems for industrial, data center, outdoor and hybrid applications.

As the Mechanical Design Engineer you are responsible for product design, including product specifications, material selection, parametric modeling, and detailing drawings. We’re looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who can turn sheet metal into mission-critical infrastructure, designing IT datacenter racks, and network enclosures. This role blends hands-on product design, standards-driven engineering, and cross-functional project leadership. You’ll own designs from concept through production, ensuring performance, manufacturability, and compliance with key industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:
Product Design & Engineering

  • Design IT racks, network enclosures, from concept through production, based on customer specifications.
  • Develop product specifications, layouts, and detailed CAD models (parametric design)
  • Create fabrication drawings for sheet metal components (bending, punching, welding, finishing)
  • Design for manufacturability, cost efficiency, and scalability
  • Support enclosure and accessory packaging solutions
Standards & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards including:
    • EIA-310 (rack standards)
    • UL 2416, UL 60950, and related UL/IEC/CSA requirements
  • Support product certification efforts and agency submissions
  • Validate designs against thermal, structural, and safety requirements
Testing & Validation
  • Plan and execute design verification testing (mechanical, thermal, environmental)
  • Interpret test results and refine designs accordingly
  • Support prototype builds and pilot production
Project Ownership
  • Lead or contribute to cross-functional project teams
  • Manage timelines, deliverables, and engineering milestones
  • Provide regular updates on schedule, cost, and risks to Project Management
  • Drive engineering changes (ECNs), documentation, and release processes
Documentation & Systems
  • Support the creation and maintenance:
    • Bills of Materials (BOMs)
    • Material master data
    • Installation and field modification instructions
  • Support ERP systems (SAP preferred) for product data management
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Work closely with global design engineering team, local manufacturing, supply chain, and quality teams
  • Interface with customers to understand application requirements
  • Identify opportunities for product improvement, cost reduction, and standardization
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field
  • 4–6+ years of relevant design experience (enclosures, racks, or sheet metal products preferred)
Technical Skills
  • Strong CAD skills (PTC Creo / Windchill preferred)
  • Experience with sheet metal design and manufacturing processes
  • Preferred experience performing FEA simulations (structural, thermal, or vibration) to validate and optimize designs
  • Understanding of IP/NEMA enclosure ratings
Standards Knowledge (Highly Preferred)
  • EIA-310 rack standards
  • UL 2416, UL 60950 (or similar safety standards)
  • General UL, IEC, CSA compliance frameworks
  • Working knowledge of Open Compute Project (OCP) rack designs, architectures, and specifications is a plus
Preferred Experience:
  • Design of IT/data center infrastructure or network racks
  • Experience designing or supporting OCP-based rack systems or hyperscale data center architecture
  • Experience with DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and risk-based design methodologies
  • Experience working with global or remote engineering teams
  • Familiarity with SAP or similar ERP systems
  • Exposure to thermal management or power distribution systems
