HVAC Technician – Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities (HVAC Focus):
- Perform advanced troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of HVAC systems, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
- Conduct routine and preventive maintenance to ensure optimal system performance and longevity.
- Inspect HVAC systems regularly to identify issues, ensure proper operation, and maintain compliance with safety standards.
- Assist with installation, startup, and testing of HVAC systems and components.
- Utilize specialized HVAC tools, diagnostic equipment, and industry best practices to complete work efficiently and safely.
Secondary / Support Responsibilities:
- Perform minor electrical and plumbing tasks directly related to HVAC systems (e.g., controls, wiring, condensate drains, basic piping).
- Assist with general maintenance tasks as needed, including basic repairs, equipment upkeep, and facility support.
- Support emergency and on-call operations, including after-hours response when required.
- Assist with seasonal or operational needs such as snow removal, basic grounds work, or minor facility repairs.
General Expectations:
- Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with team members; may provide guidance to assistants or helpers.
- Perform manual labor for extended periods in varying indoor and outdoor conditions.
- Complete other duties as assigned in support of facility operations.
Knowledge Of:
- HVAC system diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance practices.
- HVAC tools, equipment, and related electrical/mechanical components.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical systems as they relate to HVAC.
- Safe operation of vehicles and maintenance equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience).
- Minimum three (3) years of maintenance or construction experience, including at least one (1) year in HVAC.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license.
- HVAC apprentice license and/or relevant certification.
- EPA Section 608 Universal Certification (required within 6 months if not already obtained).
- Mechanic III: At least one trade certification.
- Mechanic IV: Master HVAC certification or three (3) or more trade certifications.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and up to 80 lbs occasionally.
- Frequent physical activity including climbing, kneeling, crouching, and lifting.
- Exposure to mechanical systems, electrical hazards, weather conditions, and job site environments.
- Ability to work in both indoor and outdoor conditions, including extreme temperatures.
