Duties

Serves as a mechanical engineer in the design, development, test, checkout and readiness of technical systems (cryogenic, hydraulic, pneumatic, etc.) required in support of both rocket engine and component level test projects at Stennis Space Center.,Resolves mechanical engineering problems utilizing advanced technical knowledge of mechanical systems such as piping systems, pipe supports, test article support structures, and fluid components.,Consults with management and personnel in preparing requirements and criteria for test projects for construction/modification of facility systems. Resolves technical difficulties that can be overcome by changes in approach, criteria or requirements.,Provides guidance and technical advice to junior engineers and specialists with the organization on the performance of related assignments. Serves as consultant on assigned projects in areas such as propulsion and power.,Applies theories, principles, practices, and techniques associated with facility systems such as valve control pneumatics, hydraulics, cryogenics, and high-pressure gases including components, piping, and tubing.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Designing, troubleshooting, and repairing pneumatic or hydrostatic components including replacing valve actuation packages, testing pneumatic or hydrostatic piping systems or vessels, and in-place recertification of safety relief valves; Providing engineering guidance to design and operations engineers during design and build-up of technical systems in support of propulsion testing of engines and engine components; and Reviewing mechanical drawings and specifications for technical system designs and providing feedback as it relates to components, piping, tubing, flowmeters, and relief devices. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following: a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science, or other field of Science c) Social science, medical, or other fields directly related to the duties of the position. If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
