    SECONDARY READING SPECIALIST (6-12)
                                                                                                                                                                     
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Valid teaching credential
    Successful teaching experience in teaching struggling readers
    Good communication and leadership skills
    Interest in working with struggling readers and writers
    Ability to self-reflect
    Ability to receive, reflect, and respond to feedback
     
    REPORTS TO:

    Assistant Superintendent, Building Principal, and Reading Recovery Teacher Leader
                                                   
    MISSION:
    To remediate reading difficulties in secondary students. Provide testing, monitoring, and documentation for Individualized Reading Plans.
     
    JOB GOAL:
    The intent of this position is to facilitate student growth in accordance with state standards and guidelines for Reading proficiency.  The Reading Specialist will work with the teachers and principals to ensure effective program implementation. 
     
    The selected candidate will be provided with training as applicable.
     
    SPECIFIC DUTIES INCLUDE:

    • Working with Reading Recovery students every day
    • Provide reading literacy lessons for students
    • Collecting data and assist the Teacher Leader and building principal(s) in preparing annual site report
    • Informing groups about Reading Recovery
    • Participating in a variety of professional development activities to achieve and maintain reading specialist skills
    • Working with local administrators to implement district and school plans
    • Support exited Reading Recovery students
    • Provide small group interventions to struggling readers during RtI

     
    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Teaches reading literacy/Reading Recovery lessons to small groups of students.
    2. Provides in-depth diagnostic reading evaluations and structures programs of remediation for Reading Recovery students.
    3. Assesses potential Reading Recovery students using Observation Survey of Early Literacy Achievement.
    4. Assesses and works closely with each student so as to teach him/her more effectively and to evaluate his/her progress more accurately.
    5. Maintains a healthy, positive climate for learning with Reading Recovery Children in the Reading area, taking special care to assist the students to develop reading scaffolding skills.
    6. Maintains good discipline and a cooperative atmosphere, while helping students to develop self-direction and self-control.
    7. Assists students in understanding learning objectives.
    8. Provides opportunities for application of reading skills.
    9. Cooperates with all others assigned to work with the students and strives for direct interaction between the classroom teacher, Reading Recovery teachers, and the Teacher Leader.
    10. Evaluates and selects special materials and equipment for reading.                                                     
    11. Develops materials to support the Reading Recovery/literacy program.
    12. Confers with parents concerning students' special reading problems.
    13. Keeps abreast of developments in reading and Reading Recovery education through professional reading and study and participation in professional, collaborative activities.
    14. Reflects on feedback from the Teacher Leader, approaching the work of Reading Recovery with a growth mindset.
    15. Complies with any reasonable oral or written directive of the Teacher Leader or appropriate administrator.
    16. Works diligently to obtain full Reading Recovery certification (if applicable).
    17. Monitors the selection and progress of children using Reading Recovery protocol.
    18. Collects entry, exit, discontinuing, and end-of-year data on Reading Recovery students using Reading Recovery Council of North America (RRCNA) approved format, procedures and materials.                   
    19. Assists Teacher Leader and building Principal in preparing annual reports.
    20. Serves as a specialist to support classroom teachers in their work with challenging students.
    21. Works with the Teacher Leader, Site Coordinator and building administrators to implement Reading Recovery with fidelity.

     
    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    Approximately 180 days; salary and fringe benefits to be set by Board of Trustees.

    Performance of this job will be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certified Personnel.
