TITLE: Substitute Paraeducator BUILDING: Elementary and/or Secondary
(Special Education/Basic Ed)
REPORTS TO: Building Principal or Designee
POSITION SUMMARY
May be required to provide close supervision to high needs students, individual (one-to-one),
small group instruction and positive behavior support to students with special needs in a “self-
contained” setting, under the immediate supervision of certificated staff. May be required to
assist with personal care skill development as needed. Indirectly work under the direction of
the building principal and director of special programs. Be primarily responsible for providing
one-to-one and/or small group basic skills teaching support; establish supportive and
consistent experiences for students; collaborate with teaching and support staff; implement
consistently positive behavior management strategies; and perform other duties and
responsibilities as assigned by the principal/director of special programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
● Ability to work independently
● Ability to establish rapport with students in order to maintain an effective learning environment.
● Ability to Tutor students in math, reading, etc
● Supervise student(s) as needed
● Demonstrate dependability in work attendance/job presence with the ability to adjust daily to
various scheduling changes and changes in students’ needs; physical stamina and good health
necessary to perform required responsibilities and the essential functions of this job.
● Strong academic background
● Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, and
oral form.
● Ability to communicate effectively in a pleasant, tactful, and professional manner.
● Able to physically lift students if necessary
● Assist the teacher with clerical needs (i.e., administer tests as directed, record grades, check
notebooks, maintain attendance records, correct papers) as assigned.
● Possess a current First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain within reasonable amount of time
● Must maintain confidentiality of student records and information
● Able to provide personal care services (includes diapering, toilet training, feeding)
● Must have completed or able to complete and maintain current training in de-escalation
strategies (Right Response training) if required
● Ability to work as an effective team member.
● Demonstrate a high level of responsibility, initiative, and teamwork.
● Other duties as assigned to meet the needs of the students.

Knowledge of and experience with behavior and classroom management techniques; experience
working with students who exhibit challenging behavior preferred.

Knowledge/Skills:
● Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to

● Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job
include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications;
preparing and maintaining accurate records.
● Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents,
and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or
present information to others; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions.
● Specific Knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the
job include: concepts of grammar and punctuation; stages of child development and learning
styles; and age appropriate activities. Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings;
collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
● Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing
defined but different processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods.
● Knowledge of student safety rules/procedures
EDUCATION:
● High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
EXPERIENCE:
● Job related experience is desired, particularly working with students of the age of those at the
school assignment.

● Previous successful classroom or similar experience in working with students with special needs
preferred.
CLEARANCES/CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:
Any offer of employment is contingent upon the results of fingerprint background check, passing a post-
offer employment physical, and Washington State Sexual Misconduct Disclosure check with results to
the satisfaction of the district.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
Possess current CPR/First Aid/AED card or be willing to obtain one within ninety (90) days of
employment.
CONTINUING EDUCATION/TRAINING:
● De-escalation strategies (Right Response training) if required
● Safeschools Training as required by the district
