Job Summary/Basic Function

The Public Safety Assistant (PSA) is responsible for public safety support work. The PSA performs duties in support of law enforcement personnel including Dispatch (communications), preliminary non-violent investigations, lost property reports, building checks, parking enforcement, and other non-emergency security activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides a safety and security presence on campus by application of conscientious vehicle and foot patrol functions. Conducts security and safety inspections of campus buildings and grounds, opens and secures buildings, and performs crime prevention functions.

  • Responds to requests for service including building lock outs, escorts, lost property reports, minor medical calls and other security-related calls for service and completes all related documentation. Enforces applicable college policies and college parking regulations. Assists with traffic-related tasks including traffic control and assistance at traffic crashes. Renders public relation services to the college community and visitors.

  • Receives messages via telephone, radio, and other methods and transmits the information to appropriate resources. Receives calls for service from students, staff, and others with accuracy, speed and confidence. Gathers sufficient information to assure appropriate response. Exercises sound judgement to evaluate situations and prioritize the need for emergency or immediate assistance.

  • Assists with the placement and management of event parking signs on campus. Assists with security-related tasks at special events. Delivers documents to various campus offices. Assists with the processing of crime scenes and collection of evidence at the direction of a law enforcement officer. Handles the transfer and storage of property in the form of lost and/or recovered property.

  • Monitors college video surveillance systems, emergency telephone lines and fire/intrusion/panic alarms. Operates a two-way radio communication system.

  • Maintains a log of daily calls, operates a computer-assisted dispatch system, completes related reports and performs other general office work. Processes requests and records related to fleet requests and parking registration.

Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED

This position requires a  valid driver's license for the operation of a company owned, rented or leased vehicle.
