Job Description

Space Center Houston is a space exploration learning destination dedicated to revealing how science and humanity power space exploration through meaningful, moving experiences about people and the courage, innovation, and teamwork they use to expand the boundaries of what's possible. We inspire guests of all ages to connect with the significance of space exploration as incredible feats of human spaceflight continue to bring joy and wonder to the world. Owned and operated by the nonprofit Manned Space Flight Education Foundation, we are the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center and a Smithsonian affiliate.

The Staff Accountant is responsible for providing general accounting support across the Finance department, including journal entries, reconciliations, reporting, and analysis. This role will also serve as a cross-functional backup for procurement, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll to ensure continuity of financial operations. Responsibilities and qualifications are shown below:

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Assist in monthly close processes, including research and resolution of reconciling items.
  • Support preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports.
  • Analyze transactions and financial data to ensure accuracy and compliance with internal controls and GAAP.
  • Maintain organized and accurate accounting records and documentation.
  • Serve as backup for procurement, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll as needed.
  • Assist with budget preparation and forecasting processes.
  • Assist with annual audit activities and preparation of assigned schedules.
  • Support Finance system administration tasks such as data entry, reporting, and basic user support.
  • Cooperate with fellow team members, accepting additional duties as needed to ensure efficient operation of Space Center Houston.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of 2–3 years of accounting experience; nonprofit experience preferred.
  • Prior payroll experience is desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency with automated accounting systems required. Sage Intacct and Martus experience preferred.
  • Strong Excel skills (intermediate to advanced) and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Solid understanding of GAAP, financial controls, and accounting best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate across departments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Primarily works in an office environment with frequent use of a computer, phone, and standard office equipment.  
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for extended periods while working at a desk or facilitating meetings and onboarding sessions.  
  • Visual acuity sufficient to review financial records, reconcile figures, and identify discrepancies.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
