Job Description

About the Department

This position is responsible for assisting in the repair and maintenance of city vehicles.

Position Duties

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Assists fleet maintenance manager and mechanics.
  • Assists in the maintenance of the shop, tools, and equipment.
  • Notifies supervisor of supplies needed.
  • Performs vehicle and equipment maintenance services.
  • Completes vehicle maintenance work orders and forwards to appropriate personnel.
  • Assists with service calls.
  • Picks up parts and supplies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Fleet Maintenance Manager assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.


GUIDELINES

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.


CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, other city personnel, and parts vendors.
  • Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of city safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of equipment maintenance principles and practices.
  • Skill in the use of hand and power tools, air compressors, and hydraulic jacks.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

Other Qualifications

  • Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
