Application Engineer - RMU/SWB

Location: Houston, TX

The Opportunity

The Switchboard / RMU Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves as the technical authority for low- and medium-voltage switchboards, switchgear lineups, and Ring Main Unit (RMU) systems integrated into Integra Mission Critical’s modular power platforms.

This role defines equipment standards, protection strategies, integration architecture, and performance criteria to ensure safe, reliable, scalable, and compliant power distribution systems. The SME supports product development, manufacturing, commissioning, and field operations to ensure seamless deployment of mission-critical electrical infrastructure

What you will do?

Technical Authority & Standards

  • Serve as enterprise-level technical expert for:
    • Low-voltage switchboards and switchgear
    • Medium-voltage switchgear and distribution
    • Ring Main Units (RMUs)
    • Bus systems and distribution assemblies
  • Develop and maintain electrical distribution design standards and specifications.
  • Define standard breaker configurations, bus ratings, fault duty requirements, and redundancy strategies.
  • Establish arc-flash mitigation and protection coordination standards.
  • Ensure alignment with NEC, UL 891, UL 1558, IEEE, and applicable medium-voltage standards.

Protection & Power System Integration

  • Lead short-circuit analysis, selective coordination studies, and protection scheme development.
  • Define relay protection logic, breaker trip settings, and interlocking strategies.
  • Oversee integration of switchgear and RMUs with:
    • Utility service entrance
    • Generators
    • UPS systems
    • Transformers
    • EPMS and supervisory controls
  • Support microgrid, paralleling, and multi-source distribution architectures where applicable.

 

Product Development & Standardization

  • Partner with Product Engineering to standardize switchboard and RMU platforms for modular deployment.
  • Define scalable configurations that support rapid manufacturing and repeatable installation.
  • Review and approve equipment layouts, bus bracing, compartmentalization, and accessibility considerations.
  • Support value engineering initiatives while maintaining system reliability and compliance.

 

Manufacturing & Testing Oversight

  • Establish factory acceptance testing (FAT) standards and inspection criteria.
  • Review OEM submittals, shop drawings, and test reports.
  • Support integration of switchgear into modular skids and enclosure systems.
  • Ensure documentation accuracy including one-lines, wiring diagrams, protection settings, and labeling.

 

Commissioning & Field Support

  • Provide technical oversight during startup, energization, and commissioning.
  • Support troubleshooting of protection mis-coordination, nuisance tripping, or integration issues.
  • Assist Construction and Commissioning teams with utility coordination and MV cable terminations.
  • Participate in root cause analysis for distribution-related field events.

 

Vendor & OEM Management

  • Develop and maintain relationships with major OEMs (e.g., Schneider Electric, Siemens, Eaton, ABB).
  • Evaluate vendor capabilities and support procurement strategy.
  • Lead technical review meetings and approve deviations or substitutions.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in switchgear, switchboard, or medium-voltage distribution system design.
  • Strong background in protection coordination and power system analysis.
  • Experience supporting energization and commissioning in mission-critical or industrial environments.
  • Deep knowledge of NEC and relevant UL/IEEE standards.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
    • Experience in data centers, utility interconnection, healthcare, or industrial facilities.
    • Experience with modular or prefabricated power infrastructure.
    • Familiarity with digital relays and power monitoring systems.
