Description
The Behavioral Specialist serves as a key resource for campers and staff, providing support in addressing personal, relational, and camp-related concerns. This role is responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment while maintaining a positive and proactive presence in all camp programs. The Behavioral Specialist plays an active role in promoting emotional well-being and supporting a positive camp experience for all participants. Essential Functions:
- Assist in preparing and leading Administrative Staff Training and All Staff Training sessions
- Review Camper “Tips for Success” forms and address identified needs
- Provide support to campers and staff experiencing personal or camp-related concerns
- Report serious incidents (e.g., safety concerns, rule violations, abuse) to Camp Directors
- Communicate with parents regarding situations requiring their involvement and support
- Comply with all state laws related to reporting and documenting child abuse
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming office environment
- Document and address situations impacting emotional or physical safety
- Remain accessible to staff and campers, offering ongoing guidance and support
- Mediate and intervene to improve relationships and overall camp experience
- Serve as a liaison between campers, staff, and administration, including support for international staff
- Coordinate special camper needs (e.g., laundry) with appropriate staff
- Promote a positive camp environment and high staff morale
- Participate in Administrator on Duty responsibilities and evening activities as assigned
- Model and reinforce core values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility
- Follow and enforce all camp policies and procedures
- Maintain positive relationships with parents, visitors, and the public
- Complete required documentation, including end-of-season reporting, in a timely manner
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Desire and ability to work with and relate to children and peers in an outdoor environment
- Minimum of three years of prior camp staff experience
- Background in social work, psychology, or experience supporting youth with diverse behavioral or social-emotional needs
- Sound judgment; strong listening, communication, and discretion skills
- Positive role model with high integrity and adaptability
- College senior or equivalent; must be at least 21 years old
- Current First Aid and Adult and Child CPR certifications
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to communicate, supervise, and work with assigned age groups and skill levels, and provide clear instruction
- Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and apply behavior management techniques
- Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and activity-related hazards
- Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and administer first aid
- Ability to communicate with parents and state agencies and maintain confidential records
