Description
The Senior Building Inspector is a full-time, non-exempt, skilled & technical position within the Building Inspections Department of the Village of Pleasant Prairie and reports directly to the Director of Building Inspections. This position is primarily responsible for providing effective and efficient residential, and commercial inspection services and information to the Pleasant Prairie community.
The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m to 4:30 p.m
Job Duties
- Reviews permit and construction plans for buildings to be constructed, altered, repaired, moved or demolished to ensure compliance with all applicable codes, ordinances and regulations.
- Conducts on-site building inspection of commercial, residential, industrial, and institutional construction within the Village during the various stages of construction and remodeling.
- Performs tabulations of permit fee requirements, tracks time for inspection activities, and interprets various building codes.
- Coordinates with Village legal, planning, engineering, public works, fire safety and police regarding building, fire, life safety, and other code interpretations, applications, and enforcement.
- Receives and responds to calls and answers questions regarding permit and code requirements.
- Reviews damaged buildings for safe occupancy after fires and other occurrences.
- Performs accurate and timely processing of permits and inspections.
- Consults with and communicates effectively with the public, developers, engineers, architects, property owners, contractors, and provides necessary information regarding code and ordinance requirements.
- Leads by example and enforces all Village & Department policies and procedures, and Village codes and ordinances.
- Performs other duties and special assignments as directed within the scope of the Building Inspections Department.
Requirements
Physical
- Frequent movement throughout the Village boundaries, worksites, and office environments, requiring regular standing, walking, and/or sitting.
- Frequent use of PPE such as, but not limited to, Type 2 hardhat, safety glasses, safety boots, and safety gloves.
- Occasional activities including stooping, crouching, kneeling, and climbing.
- Frequent work outdoors in various conditions, including hazardous environments, confined spaces, poor ventilation, muddy or wet areas, and exposure to weather extremes.
- Frequent use of ground ladders at various heights or on rooftops.
- Frequent exposure to moderately loud noise levels, machinery, and moving equipment.
- Regular operation of tools and equipment including a measuring tape, calculator, flashlight, computer, phone, copier, and standard office equipment.
- Ability to recognize possible exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or skin contact, and to take protective measures.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions safely with or without reasonable accommodations.
Education / Certification Requirements
- 2+ years of experience as a Municipal Building Inspector and/or Journeyman in plumbing, or carpentry, Field Engineer or other related construction experience.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- State of Wisconsin Certification for Commercial Building Inspector and/or Commercial Plumbing Inspector.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of all phases of construction and has the ability to read blueprints and compare to actual construction.
- Ability to accurately interpret the Uniform Dwelling Code, Wisconsin Administrative Code, ICC Codes, and Municipal ordinances.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and effectively communicate technical information.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe, and Bluebeam.
- OSHA 10 Certification preferred or obtained within 6-months of start date.
- An equivalent combination of education, training, or work experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.
