Job Description

Job Summary:



The Department of Biology is seeking a Laboratory Coordinator (part-time staff) to work approximately 20 hours a week as needed by the department, managing and coordinating the operations of all the undergraduate biology laboratories. This includes courses that cover instruction across all tiers of introductory biology, microbiology, botany, zoology, anatomy and physiology, embryology, and genetics. The coordinator will work closely with faculty members, students, and other staff to ensure smooth functioning of the laboratories and facilitate effective lab experiences.



 



Specific duties are as follows:



Laboratory Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the biology laboratories, including inventory management, ordering and organizing supplies and equipment, maintaining safety protocols, and ensuring proper disposal of hazardous materials.



Laboratory Set-up and Maintenance: Support the preparation and set up of laboratory experiments and demonstrations, including preparing media, solutions, specimens, and equipment. Maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, troubleshoot technical issues, and coordinate repairs and maintenance as needed.



Supervision and Training: Train and supervise student workers and other laboratory staff. Provide guidance and support in laboratory procedures, safety protocols, and data collection techniques. Monitor laboratory activities to ensure compliance with safety regulations and university policies.



Data Management: Assist in data collection, analysis, and interpretation. Maintain accurate records of laboratory activities, and laboratory inventory. Prepare reports and documentation as required.



Safety and Compliance: Ensure compliance with university, federal, and state regulations related to laboratory safety, hazardous waste disposal, and biohazard protocols. Conduct regular safety inspections, training, and drills. Respond promptly to any safety concerns or incidents.



Budget Management: Assist in managing laboratory budgets, including monitoring expenditures and reconciling invoices. Recommend cost-effective solutions for laboratory supplies, equipment, and services.
