Job Description

Location: Virtual (Board meetings held in Omaha, NE and other locations; virtual meetings held throughout the year)

WoodmenLife seeks an independent National Director candidate to join our National Board of Directors. In this role, you will provide strategic oversight, independent judgment, and forward‑thinking leadership to help guide WoodmenLife as we continue to serve our members and communities nationwide.

WoodmenLife is one of the best places to work in Omaha, with more than 135 years of service rooted in purpose and community. Since 1890, WoodmenLife has been dedicated to helping hardworking Americans secure their families’ financial futures and leave a lasting legacy. As a purpose‑driven, not‑for‑profit life insurance organization, our commitment is to our members and the communities they call home.

We are looking for someone to:

  • Provide oversight and strategic guidance to support WoodmenLife’s long‑term mission and strategic plan
  • Evaluate complex business, financial, and operational matters impacting the organization
  • Collaborate with fellow Board members and executive leadership in a confidential, high‑integrity environment
  • Serve on two Board committees (Audit, Compensation, Fraternal, or Governance) and actively participate in committee work
  • Attend in‑person Board meetings three to four times per year and additional virtual meetings as scheduled

We need someone who has:

  • Executive‑level experience in financial services, preferably within the insurance industry
  • Human resources or human capital strategy experience
  • Strategic planning and business operations experience
  • Technology leadership or oversight experience
  • Previous board service and experience in a highly regulated industry (preferred)
  • Strong communication, influence, and professional reputation within the business community

Independence Requirement: Candidates must qualify as an independent director and must not have been employed by WoodmenLife within the past three years. At the time of acceptance to the Board, it is preferred that the new member be willing and eligible to serve for the complete term of the open position.  Board members are also encouraged to participate in various WoodmenLife community outreach activities throughout the nation to become fully engaged with our membership.

What You’ll Do:

  • Provide governance‑level oversight and guidance to management on key strategic and operational decisions
  • Bring a fresh perspective that strengthens Board deliberations and decision‑making
  • Support WoodmenLife’s commitment to responsible growth, innovation, and service to members
  • Represent WoodmenLife through community engagement and outreach activities

This position is an independent contractor position and is not an employee of WoodmenLife.
