Job Description

Description of the job:


The VCUarts Department of Art Education is seeking Lead Teachers for the Creative Arts Day Camp (CADC) for children rising into grades K-9.  Each camp session will have 4 Lead Teachers who teach 4 class periods/day each week. The CADC runs each week June 15th - July 31st.


Interested candidates will develop lesson plans and gain real-world teaching experience. The Lead Teacher will provide lesson plans with a theme/big-idea, objectives, materials, and timeline for the entire week of camp. Lead Teachers are expected to take initiative developing their lessons, classroom management, material list w/budget, and the weekly CADC Exhibition for each week they are hired. The Lead Teacher will provide expectations to the Assistant Teacher on classroom management and ensure a lesson that is safe and appropriate for the class. 


Ideal candidates for the Lead Teacher position are Art Education students (including those entering student teaching) who have completed both Elementary and Secondary Practicum by Summer 2026, and are comfortable teaching in a classroom on their own. 


At the end of each week, Lead Teachers are responsible for restoring CADC classrooms and workspaces to their original state and help clean up 1 day after camp is over (August 3-7, 2026). 


Lead Teachers are Tier 2 individuals (see Compliance Training). 


Minimum Qualifications: 




  • Actively pursuing or recently obtained K-12 Art Education licensure.  




  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.




Preferred Qualifications: 




  • In VCU’s Art Education program or recent graduate (within two years) of an Art Education program with licensure. 




  • Local to Richmond Area.

Salary - Pay is $950/week session - including course planning, orientation, and clean up.
