JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: School Social Worker Intern
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education / Principal
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Enrolled in a master’s level school social worker program
completing school social worker degree and certification
CLASSIFICATION: Certified once internship is completed.
WORK YEAR: 181 Days
SALARY: Teacher Salary Schedule
EVALUATOR: Director of Special Education or Principal
BASIC FUNCTION:
Seeks to improve the school educational experience of students, parents, and staff by addressing
personal, academic, learning, emotional, adaptive, and social problems that can interfere with
student success at school. Participate in the special education process including pre-referral,
evaluation, eligibility determination, and intervention services as needed.
INTERNSHIP:
1. The intern prepares this plan in collaboration with his/her site supervisor
2. Complete a time log of all of his/her activities during the internship. It includes a list of
topics discussed with his/her supervisor each week, assessment tools used and number of
students with whom the intern works during the month.
3. Complete a research project, if required for to complete degree program.
4. Complete four case studies: Supervision provided by school social worker internship
supervisor.
5. Complete at least the minimum number of hours in their school site for internship program,
and complete the academic year of their internship school/cooperative site.
6. Follow the professional code of ethics and legal requirements for school social workers
working in public schools.
KNOWLEDGE
1. Acquire a working knowledge of the public school system organization and operation.
2. Gain knowledge of the relationship of the special education programs in relation to the
general education programs.
3. Become familiar with the role and function of the School Social Worker and his/her place in
the organization of the school system/district.
4. Develop skills in conducting diagnostic interviews providing consultative services to school
personnel and parents.
5. Gain expertise in behavioral analysis and management programs.
6. Develop expertise in the completion and scoring of formal adaptive behavior scale
assessment protocols, scoring, interpretation, presentation of interpretation of the protocol and
formulating recommendations and/or suggestions for their practical implementation.
7. Develop communicative and consultative skills and ability to participate as a school
district/building/special services team member.
8. Develop and implement effective therapeutic counseling skills.

9. Develop knowledge of the services available to children from community agencies and
professionals.
10. Performs all other responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Student
Services or designee.

2. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both oral and written form using a variety of
communication techniques and tools to ensure the appropriate flow of information,
collaborative efforts, and feedback.

complaints.

10. Provide crisis intervention services, including assessment of possible abuse. Make
mandatory reports to DCFS and QPD as appropriate. Assess student behavior to determine
potential harm to self or others. Network with outside agencies as necessary (i.e., SASS,
safe schools, counseling, etc.
11. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field.
12. Communicate and refer to outside agencies, hospitals, or clinics when appropriate.
13. Develop and manage the implementation of intervention plans for students as well as
manifestation determination for suspension.

14. Submit Medicaid claims to Special Education Cooperative and QPS.
15. May be certified in CPI.
16. Work with supervisors to develop and maintain a program of safe conditions and practices
for the welfare of the students, faculty, employees, volunteers, visitors and other invitees.
17. Follow the safety guidelines specified in the Safety and Risk Management Plan for Quincy
Public School District #172.
18. Perform related duties as assigned.
