Dr. Howard Fuller Collegiate Academy is seeking a passionate and dedicated Band Director to join our team. The Band Director will be responsible for leading the school’s music program, providing students with a high-quality musical education, and fostering a strong sense of community through music. This position will involve teaching music, directing the school’s band, and working collaboratively with faculty and staff to create a dynamic, inclusive, and engaging music program. The Band Director will also play an integral role in supporting the school’s broader mission to provide a well-rounded education that prepares students for success beyond high school.
Requirements
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field.
- Valid teaching certification or eligibility for certification in Music Education (if applicable).
- Proven experience teaching music at the secondary level, particularly in band instruction.
- Proficiency in multiple musical instruments (preferably wind, percussion, and brass
instruments). - Strong knowledge of music theory, music history, and performance techniques.
- Experience leading and managing musical ensembles, with a focus on student
development. - Passion for fostering a love of music and creativity in students.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with
students, families, and colleagues. - Ability to create a positive, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in the classroom and school community.
Desired:
- Master’s degree in Music Education or related field.
- Experience in leading various types of musical ensembles (e.g., jazz band, marching
band, etc.). - Experience working in an urban or charter school environment.
- Ability to integrate technology into music instruction and performance.
- Experience with organizing music events and performances.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects
and activities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to move around the school campus and be on your feet for extended periods
during rehearsals and performances. - Must be able to lift and carry musical instruments (up to 25 lbs) and other equipment as
needed. - Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk or using a computer for planning and
record-keeping.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends for school concerts, rehearsals, and
community events. - Willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to the
school’s mission.
Summary
Instructional Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive music curriculum for students in grades 9-12,
focused on band performance, music theory, and music appreciation. - Lead and direct the school’s concert band, jazz band, and other musical ensembles,
providing instruction in music fundamentals, ensemble techniques, and performance
skills. - Teach individual and group lessons on various instruments, ensuring that students
develop the skills necessary for participation in the school’s music program. - Provide opportunities for students to participate in music festivals, competitions, and
concerts, both in and outside of school hours. - Foster a positive, inclusive, and creative environment where students can explore their
musical interests and talents. - Plan and execute regular performances, including school concerts, pep rallies, and
community events. - Develop and implement assessments to measure students’ progress in music theory,
performance, and skills development.
Collaboration and Communication
- Collaborate with other faculty and staff to integrate music education into the broader
school curriculum, promoting the role of the arts in student development. - Communicate effectively with students, parents, and guardians about student progress,
performance opportunities, and upcoming events. - Organize and lead rehearsals, ensuring that students are prepared for performances and
music events. - Coordinate with community partners and external music organizations to enhance
students’ musical experiences and provide access to additional resources. - Build positive relationships with students to foster a supportive and motivating
environment.
Program Development and Growth
- Design and implement strategies to recruit and retain students in the band program,
promoting the importance of music education within the school community. - Stay current with trends in music education and implement best practices to continually
improve the music program. - Manage the budget for the band program, including overseeing the purchase of music
materials, instruments, and other necessary supplies. - Foster a love for music and the arts, encouraging students to pursue their passions and
develop their musical abilities.
Professional Development and Growth
- Participate in ongoing professional development to stay current with the latest
developments in music education and best practices. - Contribute to the broader school community by sharing music-related knowledge and
skills with colleagues, students, and families. - Demonstrate a commitment to cultural awareness, inclusion, and anti-bias practices in all
aspects of teaching and program development.
