About the Department
Under general supervision of the Parks Deputy Director, performs a variety of public contact, rule enforcement and visitor safety duties related to the operation and maintenance of the City’s parks and recreational facilities.
This position is Temporary and thus there are no benefits, except Oregon Sick Leave, associated with the position. Electronic funds transfers must be used for payment of net wages (i.e., Direct Deposit or Pay Card).
Compensation: $21 - $25 per hour
Hours: 11 am – 7:30 pm, scheduled to work up to 40 hours a weekWorkdays: Wed - Sun
Position Duties
- Supports Park security, safety, and rule compliance by educating visitors on park regulations and encouraging voluntary adherence; checks permits and communicates restrictions on park and facility use as needed.
- Patrols Park areas to identify misuse, unsafe conditions, vandalism, or health hazards; documents findings and reports emergencies or suspicious activity to appropriate authorities.
- Provides general information to visitors about park amenities, rules, and recreational opportunities; shares basic interpretation of the park’s natural, cultural, and historical features.
- Administers basic first aid within scope of training and contacts emergency medical services when necessary.
- Completes routine logs, incident reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner.
- Communicates regularly with supervisors regarding current issues, safety concerns, and operational improvements.
- Participates in seasonal training, staff meetings, and briefings to stay informed on procedures, safety practices, and park operations.
- Assists with recreational programming, events, and park operations, including set-up, monitoring visitor compliance, and supporting safe use of facilities.
- Monitors natural areas and open spaces for damage, hazards, or cleanliness issues; assists with litter removal and may support youth or educational programs (e.g., Junior Ranger activities).
- Performs basic maintenance tasks such as debris removal, light landscaping, and cleaning and restocking restrooms and facilities.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to support seasonal park operations.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Occupational hazards and related safety precautions and practices.
- Basic construction materials and principles.
Skills and Abilities to:

- Operate and maintain applicable vehicles, equipment, hand and power tools.
- Perform manual labor.
- Read manuals and equipment related documents.
- Comply with safety requirements of the position and actively promote safe work practices.
- Communicate effectively with coworkers, management, elected officials and the public, and display excellent interpersonal skills and awareness of controversial and/or sensitive issues.
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is with a High School Diploma or GED and, as assigned, or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
Licensing and Other Requirements:
Positions in this classification are required to possess a valid driver’s license and ability to meet the City’s driving standards.
Physical and Mental Demands:
Frequent repetitive motions including, but are not limited to, hand, wrist and finger movements; daily walking, reaching, standing, talking, hearing and seeing. Heavy Physical Work: Must be able to move objects by exerting up to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally and/or up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and/or up to ten (10) pounds of force consistently.
Duties will occasionally involve working in adverse or inclement weather conditions; exposure to high noise levels; dealing with distraught or difficult individuals; attending meetings or activities outside normal working hours; occasional response to emergency conditions during off-hours; occasional operation of a motor vehicle on public roads.Other Qualifications
