Job Description

The work conducted in this role supports the safe operation of WNC instructional activities within the NNCC automotive shop. By identifying potential safety or compliance concerns and documenting recommendations, the position helps reduce risk to students, instructors, and the institution. The review also supports the college's responsibility to ensure that instructional spaces used for training meet reasonable safety expectations and helps inform decisions about facility use, needed improvements, or corrective actions. This position is subject to a background check and will mainly be conducting work at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct a safety review of the NNCC automotive shop used for WNC instructional activities

  • Examine shop equipment, tools, ventilation systems, chemical storage, and general work areas to identify potential safety hazards or OSHA-related compliance concerns

  • Review the availability and condition of safety equipment, including items such as fire extinguishers, eyewash stations, personal protective equipment, and safety signage

  • Document observations and identify areas that may require corrective action or further review

  • Provide practical recommendations to support safe shop operations and instructional use of the facility

  • Communicate findings with WNC program staff to assist in determining next steps for addressing identified issues.

  • Assist in compiling a summary of findings

  • Assist with minor corrective actions, when appropriate, to address identified safety concerns in coordination with AmpEd Director and EH&S team

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of common safety practices in automotive shop environments

  • Basic familiarity with OSHA safety standards relevant to automotive equipment, tools and shop operations

  • Ability to identify potential safety hazards and areas of concern within a working shop environment

  • Ability to document observations clearly and communicate findings to program staff

  • Practical problem-solving skills and the ability to assist with minor corrective actions when appropriate

  • Ability to work independently, and follow established institutional and facility procedures

  • Ability to pass a background check and meet all volunteer requirements for entry into NNCC

  • Ability to enter the auto shop at the facility unescorted

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a correctional facility, in the automotive mechanics field and basic knowledge of OSHA standards for workplace safety.
