    Vacancy for a full time Literacy Specialist K-4 at West Elementary School beginning in the 2026-27 school year. All candidates must hold or be eligible for appropriate CT certification.  

    Elementary Literacy Specialist (K-4)
    The Literacy Specialist is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Reading program in grades K-4. Primary responsibilities include articulating and monitoring the delivery of the Reading program in each grade and coaching teachers to ensure that they teach Reading effectively. Collaboration with the K-4 Reading Coordinator and other Reading specialists across the district about the Reading curriculum is expected as is supporting the district goals.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
     
    Curriculum and Instruction

    1. Help set annual goals for the improvement of the K-4 Reading program by consultation with the Reading Coordinator, district literacy team, and the building principal.
    2. Observe teachers, model lessons and offer direction for improvement in Reading instruction.
    3. Meet regularly with the building principal regarding Reading needs in the building.
    4. Remain current with regard to evidence-based Reading instructional practices, including practices that are responsive to a range of learners, demonstrate a deep understanding of how to teach Reading, and be knowledgeable in curriculum design.
    5. Meet regularly with K- 4 teachers about curriculum and implementation.
    6. Interpret and articulate the present Reading curriculum and proposed curriculum changes to the Board of Education, administration, staff, and parents.
    7. Participate in Data Team, SST and PPT meetings.
    8. Provide push-in and pull-out instruction to students as determined by need.
    9. Plan and implement parent workshops and support parent communication about the Reading program.
    10. Use diagnostic assessments to inform differentiated instruction.

      Program Evaluation

    1. Regularly assess the K- 4 Reading program.
    2. Review and analyze district-wide assessments including standardized test results with building administrators and the district Reading Coordinator, and work with the principal and teachers on developing action-plans and using the data to inform instruction.
    3. Collaborate with teachers in the development of appropriate assessments in Reading.

      Teacher Growth and Professional Development

    1. Lead and support classroom teachers and grade-level teams in the delivery of the Reading program.
    2. Provide and promote staff development among teachers, and participate in the design, planning and delivery of professional learning experiences related to Reading, including a range of job-embedded professional learning (coaching cycles, lesson study, etc.).
    3. Disseminate research to staff related to Reading and serve as a resource for best practice in differentiating language arts instruction.
    4. Identify and share information on appropriate professional learning workshops and conference opportunities.
    5. Orient new teachers to the instructional program in Reading and language arts.
    6. Design and implement appropriate support structures for non-tenured teachers.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Strong ELA Background
    Experienced Classroom Teacher
    Appropriate certifications required:
    013 Elementary Teaching Certificate
    102 Remedial Reading and Remedial Language Arts
    097 Reading and Language Arts Consultancy Preferred
