Job Description

Description

This position supports the mission and work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization. The Swim Instructor maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while providing direct leadership, instruction, and motivation for swim lesson participants. The Swim Instructor assures the well-being for each participant in line with YMCA of the USA guidelines and association policies in accordance with their training. This results in cause-centered culture that is welcoming, genuine, hopeful, nurturing, and determined while also managing high-quality, member-focused aquatics programs.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

 

1.    Models the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility with members, colleagues, guests, volunteers, and vendors.

2.    Develops and maintains positive relationships with members, program participants, families, and colleagues; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA.

3.    Instructs swim lessons in accordance with YMCA Swim Lessons curriculum/guidelines; prepares lesson plans and delivers progressive instruction that builds water safety, confidence, and stroke development.

4.    Maintains accurate attendance and skill/progress records; prepares required progress reports and provides participant/family recommendations for appropriate level placement.

5.    Ensures the well-being of participants by actively scanning the class area, maintaining appropriate positioning, and remaining aware of pool surroundings and participant needs at all times.

6.    Follows all aquatic procedures and guidelines, including those related to health and safety, sessions, forms, incident/accident reporting, and staff expectations.

7.    Provides motivational support and guidance; adjusts instruction to meet participant abilities, comfort levels, and learning styles in an inclusive environment.

8.    Serves as an ambassador for YMCA programs, with a focus on aquatics schedules, enrollment pathways, and member engagement.

9.    Knows, follows, and enforces YMCA policies, emergency procedures, and mandated reporting/abuse-prevention protocols, including responsibilities related to the prevention of child abuse.

10.  Attends required meetings, trainings, and in-services; maintains current certifications and participates in skill evaluations as required.

 

Requirements

  • 18+ years.
  • Must obtain and maintain CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications within 60 days of employment.
  • Must obtain and maintain YMCA Swim Lessons Instructor certification within 6 months of employment.
  • Must be able to demonstrate swim instructor skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
  • Possess the ability to observe and instruct participants in proper stroke technique.
  • Must be people oriented, possess professional communication and organizational skills.
  • Must have a passion for helping others, patience, and the ability to adjust to evolving situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and assist in swim activities within a busy pool environment.
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults in a largely diverse population.
  • Must be willing to work flexible hours, including some weekends and holidays.
  • Must successfully complete a swimming and physical skills test upon hire, and annually according to CCC YMCA guidelines.
