The Inter Related/Instructional Support (IRIS) para works primarily with students that have learning disabilities but the students supported could have any type of disability. The environment could be in the general and/or special education classrooms as well as with one or more students. Typically responsibilities could include note taking, assisting with content review, reading material out loud, helping the student stay on task or even escorting them to an alternate location for a quieter place to work.

Job Description
Job Title: Paraeducator - Inter Related Instructional Support Exemption Status: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Principal Date Revised: July 2020
Primary Purpose:
To provide support to students with disabilities in their assigned classroom(s) by implementing plans for
instruction, monitoring behavior, and data collection.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification: High School diploma (or equivalent) required.
All Elementary Paraeducators must be Highly Qualified (48+ college hours Or college
degree Or take/pass Highly Qualified Assessment).
Special Knowledge/Skills: Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills;
ability to instruct students and manage their behavior; ability to present information
one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students.
Experience: None required but preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
● Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and materials under the direction of the licensed staff
member for the purpose of supporting and reinforcing classroom objectives.
● Administers a variety of activities (e.g. tests, homework, make-up work, etc.) and supports teachers in
the classroom.
● Assists in the implementation of instructional plans designed by the IEP team for the purpose of
presenting and reinforcing learning concepts previously presented by a licensed staff member.
● May require assisting medically fragile or physically disabled students and helping students maintain
personal hygiene.
● Attends a variety of meetings (e.g. staff meetings, in-services, workshops, etc.) for the purpose of
acquiring and conveying information relative to job functions.
● Communicates with a variety of individuals (e.g. supervising instructional staff, professional support
personnel, etc.) for the purpose of implementing IEP objectives and assisting in evaluating progress.
● Maintains instructional materials, files, and records and ensures the availability of items, providing
written references, and recording progress towards IEP goals and objectives.
● Models desired behaviors (e.g. conversation, manners, cleaning activities, listening, everyday
interactions, etc.) for students in multiple settings.
● Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of environments (e.g. classrooms, hallways,
cafeteria, community, etc) supporting a safe and positive learning environment.
● Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other
special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
● Reports incidents for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive
learning environment, and adhering to State Law and school policies as a mandated reporter.
● Ability to learn, understand, and reteach appropriate curriculum to meet student needs.
● Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work
unit.
