The Center for Health Empowerment in South Texas (CHEST)
CHEST is a community-focused nonprofit working to improve health outcomes across Greater Southside San Antonio through place-based initiatives, partnerships, and culturally responsive programming. CHEST addresses social determinants of health through data-driven strategies, community engagement, and accessible health education.
About This Internship This unique, shared internship provides the opportunity to work across both organizations on a collaborative summer project focused on community health, environmental mapping, and workforce- connected learning. The intern will split time (approximately 20 hours per week each) between DHF and CHEST, gaining experience in program operations, communications, and data systems while contributing to a real-world, community-based project.
Position Description
The Aerospace & Community Health Program Intern will support program implementation, communications, and data tracking across both organizations. This role blends project coordination, community engagement, marketing, and data analysis, offering hands-on experience in both workforce development and public health initiatives.
The intern will play a key role in supporting a summer student project that uses drone technology, mapping, and data collection to better understand community conditions and inform local decision-
making.
Key Responsibilities
Program & Project Support (DHF + CHEST)
• Support coordination of the summer student project, including scheduling, logistics, and
communication with instructors and partners
• Conduct regular check-ins with program stakeholders and assist with tracking progress
• Assist with documentation of program activities, outcomes, and impact
Data, Systems & Evaluation (Primarily DHF)
• Support setup and organization of DHF’s Salesforce CRM for program and partner tracking
• Assist in developing KPI tracking systems and simple data dashboards
• Help collect, organize, and analyze program data for reporting and long-term tracking
Marketing & Communications (DHF + CHEST)
• Develop social media content including graphics, captions, and short-form video
• Assist with creation of digital materials such as flyers, newsletters, and outreach content
• Support bilingual (English/Spanish) messaging where appropriate
• Track and analyze engagement metrics to inform communication strategies
Community Health Communications (CHEST)
• Contribute to culturally responsive public health messaging and outreach campaigns
• Support promotion of CHEST programs, events, and resources
• Assist in developing communication tools that increase awareness and participation
Internship Deliverables
The intern will contribute to a set of practical, real-world deliverables, which may include:
• Program Dashboard & Data Tracking System (DHF)
A structured system for tracking student participation, partner engagement, and program
outcomes
• Social Media & Outreach Toolkit (CHEST + DHF)
A reusable content calendar, templates, and messaging framework to support ongoing
communications
• Impact Summary Report
A final report summarizing program outcomes, engagement metrics, and recommendations for
future improvement
• Branding & Communications Guide (Optional/Stretch)
A guide supporting consistent messaging, tone, and outreach strategies across programs
Preferred Qualifications
• Current college or graduate student in public health, communications, business, nonprofit
management, or a related field
• Strong organizational and project management skills
• Experience with social media platforms and tools such as Canva
• Interest in data, systems, or CRM tools (Salesforce experience is a plus but not required)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Interest in community health, education, workforce development, or nonprofit work
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required
