Job Purpose
A Lead Electrical Engineer performs the duties of both an experienced electronic design engineer and a department supervisor. The Lead Electrical Engineer will be responsible for quoting new projects, leading the electrical hardware development of one or more projects, promoting the growth of less-experienced engineers, and developing Packet Digital's development processes and best practices. Candidates must be able to work in a team-based environment, lead by example, and have the ability to meet deadlines.
Description of Duties & Tasks
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Represent and lead the hardware engineering team
- Check in with team members regularly to provide guidance and ensure productivity
- Represent team in status, planning, and strategy meetings
- Work with program management to prioritize work and assign resources to projects
- Assist with proposal writing and quoting efforts
- Approve timesheets and vacation
- Execute employee performance reviews
Oversee hardware design and documentation processes
- Establish, improve, and document effective processes
- Ensure work is completed in accordance with correct processes
- Actively participate in or lead design reviews
- Assist in maintaining component and project database
Create requirements captures based on experience and customer input
- Research applicable topics
- Propose, simulate, and validate proposed architectures and circuits
- Provide project timeline estimates
Create schematics and PCB layouts based on requirements
- Document assembly, BOM, and ECO information
- Schedule schematic and layout reviews
Product development
- Cost and manufacturing optimization
- Work with other teams and team members to complete all aspects of product design
- Assembly, testing, and troubleshooting of designs
- Create customer documentation and support customers
Promote a healthy team environment
- Maintain a clean lab and workspace
- Provide learning opportunities for engineers
- Encourage open, blame-free discussions
- Seek and promote ideas from all team members
- Be a multiplier for the rest of the team
Knowledge & Skills
Required:
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
- Highly organized with attention to detail
- Extensive PCB design experience
- Strong communication skills in order to work with team to determine specifications and to provide support for a product
- Experience with test equipment operation including oscilloscopes, signal generators, and power supplies
- Conflict resolution and diplomacy skills
- Expert knowledge of best practices for product design
Work Experience & Education
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and eight years of related experience
