Job Summary
The School of Accountancy (SoA) in the College of Business and Economic Development (CBED), University of Southern Mississippi, invites applications for adjunct instructors to teach courses in accounting. Applicants should indicate in their cover letter their area of expertise and teaching interest (i.e. financial, managerial, auditing, tax, etc.).

Candidates may be asked to teach on the Hattiesburg or Gulf Park campus, in a remote delivery format, or online. Adjunct instructors are engaged to teach classes on a class-by-class, semester-by-semester basis.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Design and deliver courses covering
    the assigned content and topics.
  2. Communicate course requirements to
    students.
  3. Teach face-to-face, hybrid, and
    online classes as needed.
  4. Be available to students enrolled
    in their class for support and course advising, including exams, required
    remediation, and summative evaluations.
  5. Be collaborative with other CBED
    faculty as well as the Director of the SoA to plan, implement, and evaluate
    each course offering taught to maintain quality and effectiveness.
  6. Assign and evaluate assessments
    required for assurance of learning.
  7. Follow the policies and procedures
    of the College of Business and Economic Development, the School of Accountancy,
    and the University of Southern Mississippi.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's
degree in Accounting; or graduate degree in business with 18 graduate
credit hours in accounting. For tax courses, a Juris Doctorate with a
graduate degree in taxation (L.L.M. or MST) will meet the minimum
qualifications.
Meet the
requirements of a scholarly academic, practice academic, scholarly
practitioner, or instructional practitioner in accounting for AACSB
accreditation purposes.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to teach effectively (both online and in traditional settings) at the university level
  • Exceptional written and oral communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Proven track record of effective teaching practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty from all backgrounds, programs, and colleges. 
  • Knowledge of the field of advanced business law topics
  • The ability to navigate and use learning management systems for teaching, such as Canvas, as well as other technological communications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Proficiency in teaching strategies and techniques for all student populations
Preferred Qualifications
An earned doctorate in Accounting or other appropriate related field from an AACSB accredited institution
Experience in public or corporate accounting
Professional certification as a CPA or CMA
Prior teaching experience at a four-year university delivering online and campus classes
Experience with learning management and online homework systems
