    Title:                                    8.04   Head Mechanic

    Reports To:                        Transportation Director

    Employment Status:          Full Time- 260 days

    FLSA Status:                      Non-Exempt

    Rate of Pay - $24.26 per hour - 8 hours a day

     

    Qualifications:     

                    1.   Valid driver's license with CDL endorsement; bus drivers' certificate
                    2.   High school diploma or equivalent.

                    3.   At least eighteen (18) years old.

                    4.   Sufficiently skilled with experience and/or training in automotive mechanics to understand the vehicle; be adequately equipped to follow a definite plan which                        is thorough, systematic and adequate.

                    5.   Be able to instruct other employees, evaluate their work and offer suggestions for improvement.

                    6.   Ability to lay out work for others, give instructions and direct other mechanics in a firm, yet fair and friendly manner

                    7.  Professional tact, diplomacy and presentation with administrators, staff, teachers, students, parents and the community.

                    8.   Conscientious and assumes responsibility for own work performance.

                    9.   Good health, high moral character and good attendance record.

                    10.   Demonstrate enthusiasm and a sincere desire to aid all students.

     

    General Description:   

    Maintain and provide a safe and reliable bus fleet which, in addition to emergency repairs, will include regular and periodic inspection and maintenance procedures to reduce frequency of repairs and lower cost of operation and maintenance.

     

    Essential Functions:

     1.   Ensure that safe and satisfactory equipment is maintained at all times.

    2.    Establish and maintain a program of preventative maintenance.

    3.  Schedule, service and inspect buses and other Board-owned motor vehicles on a  regularly scheduled program making repairs as needed, i.e. every 1,000 to 1,500                 miles.

    4. Have access to and know how to use the owner/driver's manual and the service manual provided by the vehicle manufacturer.

    5. Responsible for the summer bus maintenance program and having all buses ready for the annual inspection by the Ohio Highway Patrol. 

    6.  Maintain an inventory of supplies and materials.

    7.  Keep adequate cost records.

    8.  See that the bus garage is clean, orderly and free of hazardous conditions.

    9. Promote good public relations with those with whom he/she works through personal   appearance, attitude and conversation.

    10. Arrange time schedules.

    11.  Assist in the training of prospective drivers.

    12. Assign duties to others as needed.

    13. Approve/disapprove of school buses for immediate use and approve repairs and replacement of parts as necessary.  Any immediate concerns are to be reported to the          transportation supervisor.

    14.      Take inservice training courses where possible and practical.

    15.       Keep records and make reports as required on :

    • All buses, i.e. tune-ups, tires, brakes, oil changes, clutches, safety equipment, etc.
    • Garage equipment

    16.   Order all replacement parts for buses, chassis and gear lubrication, motor oil, anti-freeze, batteries, gas and oxygen, radiators, heater cores, gasoline, etc. using                    purchasing procedures, purchase order numbers, etc. as authorized by the transportation supervisor.

    17.   Oversee the record keeping for all buses and maintenance.

    18.   Estimate damage to buses caused by accidents.

    19.   Place in each bus first aid equipment, fuel sheets, etc.

    20.   Responsible to go out on all bus breakdowns.

    21.  Assist the general maintenance person when summer inspection is over or in emergency situations.

    22.   Serve as custodian of all Board-owned garage equipment.

     

    Other Duties and Responsibilities:

    1. Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.

    2.   Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.

    3.  Conduct other duties related to the mechanic's duties as assigned by the transportation supervisor.

     

    ADDITIONAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

    1.     Occasional exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.

    2.     Occasional operation of a vehicle under inclement weather conditions.

    3.     Occasional interaction among unruly children.
